Affordable option to shorten the hike and get to the mountains faster

The train connects the town of Zermatt and Sunnegga. It's fast, convenient, and great ways to save lots of down hills on the hike.

clean and seemingly futuristic, especially by comparison to transportation systems in America. It quickly takes you up to breathtaking views of the Matterhorn.

Take the funicular from Zermatt to Sunnegga. It takes less than 10 minutes, and views at the top are very good. There are many easy walks from here, or take the gonola and cable car to the top of the Rothorn.

We took the Gornergrat Bahn up to the top on our first morning. Then, took the Sunnegga funicular up on the second morning. With three young kids, we preferred Sunnegga! The kids LOVED the playground and the lake. We all loved how few people were on the Sunnegga funicular (each way) and how few people were on the trail and... More

this cable train (10 min walk from the station of zermatt )takes you from Zermatt up to Sunnegga(2288 m ) in 3 minutes. It is quick, and a bit cold inside, so take a vest or sweater with you ( even in the summer, we were there in august ) When you get up there, the view on the Matterhorn... More

I personally liked it more than Rothorn. Leisee is really beautiful. The restaurant there serer good food. Very nice view of Matterhorn from the Leisee. They even have a ropeway service from the sunnegga funicular stop uptil down the lake, which I liked.

50 Years ago when I last went, there was a chairlift up to the top of the cliffs above Zermatt. Now you walk along a tunnel then climb aboard an underground train which takes you up at an angle of about 60 degrees, and you step out into daylight on the top. From there you can take a variety of... More

Rmb to check the last descent timing for all lifts and funicular! Pack a lunch and be prepared to go for a hike. You'll be able to get a discount on the lifts/funicular if you have a swiss travel pass (I paid under 20francs). It's much cheaper than gng to lake Riffelsee on lifts (I think it cost ard 90francs).... More

If you are not keen on cable cars, then this funicular railway will get you up a mountain instead. At the top there are great views of the Matterhorn and a small swimming lake. It wasn't that warm when we were there, but still nice to sit on the sun loungers around the lake. You can hire a bike and... More
