This gorgeous church that we admire today was completed in the first decades of the 1900s. But its antecedents extend far into the distant past, with a first mention within a 1285 document.
Interesting to learn that initially the congregation weren’t in favour of a new build but events galvanised and it was consecrated in 1916.
An attractive exterior has a medley of stone work and is dominated by a fine bell tower that was completed in 1925.
An exquisite high altar is reached passing lovely columns and arches. Their upper portions have decorative motifs in yellow.
At the rear is a fine organ from which undoubted sonorous music emanates when in flow.

As you walk through Zermatt you see from place to place the old buildings that were preserved. Simple, made of big logs of wood they gave us an understanding of how life was before this became a center of winter activities in Europe. Yet, the church was not humble, but large and imposing, showing how the community chose to honor their religion. I wish they would have had more explanations for the visitors though.

There are several masses, two in German, one saturday night and one sunday morning. The usual presider/homilist is quite good. But will speak in High German (not swiss german). So those of you who can speak German will be able to understand him. Music is usually quite good. You don't have to dress up many of the folks come in very casual clothing. Some of the locas are dressed. They also have daily mass for those of you who are inclined to do so! You can get the times on the Zermatt.ch website

I understand this is an active church for German speaking residents of the area. We did not attend a service. We are interested in church architecture , art and history, so we visit a lot of churches.
This church really did not appeal to us. The center ceiling painting was quite bizarre with a Noah's ark theme that showed modern people ( swimsuit, tv, etc. being left out of the Ark). Also the altar on the right had one of the strangest Christ figures we have ever seen
. I did like the simple stained glass windows. I would not go out of my way to visit here, but it was right in town and there was nothing else to do with the town neatly empty on a chilly cloudy May Monday.

If you're skiing in Zermatt over Christmas and wonder if you can find a good Midnight Mass, try St. Mauritius Church. For quite a long time before the mass, this catholic church plays beautiful and astonishingly loud bells (for such a little church) for the whole town to enjoy. They did the mass in 3 languages German, French and English ... something for everybody. All felt welcome. This very pleasant midnight mass starts at 23:00.

It locates near the museum of Zermatt, I went there after visiting the Main Street and that museum.
I felt very comfortable and quiet. The ceiling painting and stained glass are both lovely!

We enjoyed Mass in this lovely Church in a full Ochestra Setting as part of The Zermatt Musical Festival.
There was a full Choir complete with 2 Soprano's,a beautiful Tenor & an excellent Baritone.
Going to Mass before was never as exciting as this was.The Church was full, which these days is very hard to achieve unless it is Easter Or Christmas.
Perhaps it was because of The Music Festival, whatever ? It was great to enjoy & the standing ovation accorded the whole crew was deafening & sustaining.
The Church is very nice & the Bells @ 9.45 am & again @ 5.45 pm are as loud as I have ever heard.
Not sure why they are so loud @ these times.
Mass Tmes are : 7.00pm on aSaturday Night & 10.00am on a Sunday Morning.
Well worth a visit on your journey to Zermatt

The church is probably best known for the view of the Matterhorn from the front. The ceiling painting of Noah's ark is very different and worth seeing. There is an alter on one side that has unusual martyrs including a women holding her breasts on a plate and another holding tweezers that were used to pluck out her eyes.

The tower of St. Mauritius Church dominates Zermatt. It was built in 1913 and the architect was Adolf Gaudy, who was an important church designer. It is situated in the main town square (Kirchplatz). It has altars from the 18th century.
The interior of the church is baroque and very elaborate. There is a lot of gold. The bells ring regularly and there are frequent services.

The church is named after a 4th century Roman legion convert. Originally from Egypt he rose up the ranks of the Roman army to become a legion general. Assigned to the Rhone valley he received orders to slay Christians in the region. He refused these orders because he was a Christ follower himself. The cost was dear as the Roman powers killed Mauritius and most of his legion due to the insubordination. A reminder that true faith can be costly.

How can I get the view shown here in the first image of this page? I assume that is an image of the church so would need a vantage point elsewhere in Zermatt. Thank you in advance.
