Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Cute little old town with charming buildings and incredible views. A short walk from the lake but all up hill so be prepared to walk. Throw back in time and definitely worth going.

Most tourists ignore the old town of Montreux because its flowered lakeside promenade is such a strong draw. But they are missing a lot! Instead of the modern, thriving, bustling tourist resort we find at the lakeside, the old town is full of old stone buildings, winding stairs that go on forever, and the locals who move much more slowly and who greet you cheerily.

It's not hard to find the old town, but it is a bit difficult to climb the steep hill. Just go uphill -- on any street -- from the train station, and you'll soon find yourself in the maze of streets. Here you'll also find the Museum of Old Montreux (Musee du Vieux Montreux) and its attached restaurant, and an old Evangelical (Protestant) church.

The terrace of the church has stunning views over the city.

I and my wife stayed in Montreux in early Sept for a week.... Amazing place.. great ambience chilled out food and an ambience that beats the best of tourists places.... The city sponsors 50% off on some of the boat rides and free public transportation with the city card. There isa live band playing every day and the weather was beautiful, if not s bit warm for that time of the year, Sept last week.
All kinds of food were availaible, despite being vegeterians we got lovely food in a self service place called paradise.

Definetely recommend the place.

The old town of Montreux requires a walk uphill of about 25 minutes. It is a very quiet part of Montreux with narrow cobblestone streets lined with historic houses. A typical Swiss village. There is not much to see here, but go for the atmosphere. It is so different from the mondain part of Montreux along the lake. And you have nice views over the lake when walking up and downhill.

When you've had enough of the main drag through Montreux and have tired of the bling, take a walk up to La Vieille Ville, the Old Town. Alternatively, catch the 206 bus or take the funicular railway to Les Planches. You will be transported to a more fascinating place rooted in the past. This is the real historic Montreux and as you stroll through the narrow streets, you can easily imagine life there centuries ago. You can soak up the atmosphere over coffee or a light lunch in the Tea Room de la Baye and enjoy the fabulous views over the town and the lake. Alternatively, you might like to have a meal in the excellent Restaurant du Pont and watch the world go by. For nearly 240 years, La Vieille Ville has closed its main thoroughfare during the last weekend in October and has put on its own fair to celebrate the completion of the grape harvest, which would have been taken from the surrounding fields going right down to the lake. However, these erstwhile fields are now covered by what we know as Montreux. Today, the fair is only the vestige of what it used to be when their wine was celebrated there but the community, proud of its heritage, works to ensure that it continues. If you have an uncommitted half day, you should visit the Old Town and you will know the real Montreux.

The walk through the Old Town will take you about 1 hour max, it is not a big area, however very nice walk with a fantastic view from the church on the top of the hill oveviewing the city centre, the lake, the Alps...charming quiet narrow streets contracting with the busy city centre. And btw the hill is as steep as it looks like. :-)

The old town is up the hill from the lake shore and takes 10 to 15 minutes to walk to. Its quite compact with cobbled streets and old buildings and some quaint shops and restaurants. The Rue du pont which leads to a bridge ("pont") over a gorge is one of the best roads and has the Rue du pont restaurant, which is too expensive for me.
Worth a quick visit- tip- you can take escalators up through the station from the promenade to avoid much of the climb.

We found this at the end of our holiday and loved the quiet streets. Visited the Musuem about Montreux and found reasonable places to eat/drink.

Except a nice view of Montreux and the lake, there is not much to see in the old town. There a no restaurants, no attractions and no shops. Even the buildings are not that great. It is worth the detour for the view, but only if you have spare time.

Relax, chill and take your time to wander the cobbled streets of this lovely Old Town with its restaurants, cafes, fountains, flowers and views. My recommendation for a meal: Le Grutli Cafe-Restaurant at Rue du Grand-Chene 8. Tiny place up a tiny sidestreet but with a big heart!
