Originally centered on the town of Haarlem west of Amsterdam, bulb cultivation spread south initially to Hillegom and Lisse and the now-famous Keukenhof. Later bulb farming took hold further north in the Alkmaar region. All are a short distance inland from the North Sea, sheltered by sand dunes and in relatively sandys soils that are favored by these bulbs. The... More

Take the train and get off at any of the small towns. The towns are quaint and charming and each town has something interesting to discover. You'll find plenty of flowers to see and photograph.

If you are from the USA- be forwarned - order your bulbs from NL Bulb growers and let them ship to you for Fall Planting . US customs will confiscate bulbs you buy unless they have a US certified Agricultural tag on them. They took 5 of my Amarlysis Bulbs at JFK- luckily I had also ordered some for October... More

Finally sunny weather to enjoy the tulip fields in its full glory. If you have a car visit the villages Hillegom and de Zilk. Try to avoid havu traffic ti and from the Keukenhof in Lisse. Flowes will disapear soon, so go there before the middle of May.

Took the car and drove through the area called Bollenstreek (bulb area). Famous for its flowers. From mid Arpril to mid May you can see (and smell!) The seas of flowers (mostly hyacinths and tulips) in the area of Warmond, Lisse, Hillegom and Voorhout. A must see for tourists and locals alike. Rent a convertible and drive around with an... More

I'm living in the middle of it and I'm loving it. Remembering back on the first time I experienced the simplistic extravaganza of the tulip fields, I was hit by the greatness of nature. The colours are fantastic. It's not only the tulips - right now the daffodils are starting to bloom - sending us a clear message that spring... More

Needless to say, a visit to the tulips region is a must for any Dutch trip in April/May. The best way to visit the tulip fields is on a bike. Bikes are available for rent at many train stations.
