Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Prison is a very special place for me. My father was one of the 200, along with 3 other guards, who were reliable during the war and passed on information behind the scenes. Partly because of this, the raid on December 4, 1944 was a success.
I'm very proud of him.
You can read all this in the Blokhuispoort museum and the Frisian museum.

Due to covid we couldn’t visit the museum, which was a pity. One of the old prison wings was open and had little shops in the old prison cells, and that was great. The courtyard has turned into a cafe with terrace. There is also a hostel situated in the prison. Worth a visit!

The Blokhuispoort is a former Prison and now the cultural heart of Leeuwarden. It was build in 1499 as a type of fort, and was turned into a prison in 1580. The prison closed in 2007. Today you can do a guided tour by a former prison guide every Saturday at 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. Realy recomendable, tours are 10 euro. The Blokhuispoort is now the cultural heart of Leeuwarden. In the B-wing you can find all kind of creative shops in every Cell. When you continue to walk you will find an art gallery, Podium Asteriks and Café de Bak. On the other side of the Blokhuispoort there are more creative shops and offices, but also another exposition room. The Blokhuispoort is a must see in Leeuwarden.

I came here after reading reviews from other fellow TA mates, true enough it is a home to many previous prisoner especially during the WWII and recents year till before 2008 were for prisoner whom sentenced for 5yr or more.

The Dutch are very creative and thrifty, they reuse and recycled, try to preserve everything possible, even this ex-prison, amazing!

However, this is an on-going project, up-grading and furbishment etc.. I saw a library being built, many scarf-folding, trucks, bricks and visitor centre, restaurant, some companies and a hostel. It looked a bit chaotic but when you ignore the appearance, it's worth a visit. It's FOC you can just roam around. Free toilet available.

This old prison was converted to "artists heaven", where each cell is rented to a different artist of various disciplines, and they use them as working studios. While the building reminded me of my visit to Alcatraz in San Francisco, the art products in each cell were like "flowers in gun barrels". Very unusual experience.
Besides - entry is free!

The experience of our visit was wonderful. To view the ground of a old prison. We didn't stay for the tour but just looking at the area while we walk through was great. Some doors were still lock of course. They have arts and craft area where people sale they items. They also rent out the place for special events. It is a must see.

These are the old prison buildings in Leeuwarden, which have been redeveloped. The front part houses shops, museums, public art and cafes, and in the summer the huge central square is one big meeting place with bars, food and drinks and lots of tables and benches. At the back some of the buildings have been converted to residential, while inside many of the old cells are now tiny shops. Best of all is the old prison garden, which has been taken over by the community and artists to grow plants for dyes and herbs etc. That part also has sculptures and is attractively landscaped. The whole complex is lovely, and a splendid reclamation of space for the community to use.
