not the smell, but the historic meaning of this fish market lingers on

It is perhaps hard to believe in modern life that this place used to be pretty smelly. It was the Alkmaar Fish Market. With its own fresh water pumps to clean the fish and flush the fish remains away and copper waste shute rosters to withstain the aggresive fish water. Nowadays there are benches and tables in use as overflow for a local food/drink establishment.

Beautiful old spot

We had our delicious lunch right in front of the old visbanken place. You can tell it’s an historic part of the old city of Alkmaar.

A lively part of the city centre these days.

Whereas the days of fish gutting, cleaning and selling have long gone, the building work here still allows you to imagine how it was. Now, it is a lively area with several very good restaurants and bars.

Nice place in the city of Alkmaar

This place is so special because of the many terrace in the surrounding. The original place where the fish was sold.
