Alkmaar was granted cheese weighing rights and a weighing scale in 1365, and in 1612 the number of scales increased to four. Exactly when the first cheese market took place is shrouded in mystery. Old documents have been found that confirm the cheese market definitely took place in 1622, but there is also evidence that the cheese bearer's guild was... More

I have never seen so much cheese in my life! It was so fun to see the entire marketplace filled with big rounds of cheese and people in traditional garb. On the outside of the cheese market there were venders selling practical amounts of cheese and other Dutch items. There were even cheese boats going down the canal. Great fun.... More

Very interesting and spoken in English, French, german and Dutch. We got there after 9 and wandered around the stalls before finding a place to watch the cheese show, thoroughly enjoyed the history lesson and tasting the cheese. Going to the cheese museum is also a must.

The Alkmaar cheese market weighing ceremony on Fridays is very interesting to see...... It super duper crowded. There is no way to see if. You are in the second or third row, so you either need to get there an hour early and get a spot on the fence line. Or you need to come an hour or so late,... More

I think that the WAAG-PLEIN area can also be fun on other days to enjoy the historic architecture. But the tourist cheese market show is only on friday mornings in summer. The WAAG building dates from the 14th century and was converted to WAAG-GEBOUW in 1582 after serving as a chapel.

I love cheese as much as---if not more than---the next guy. Of course, we arranged our itinerary so we could visit Alkmaar on Friday for the Cheese Market. We arrived about 9:30 or so, and we were already many rows back from the railing. Besides the blocked views, there was literally a crush of people, which was a major annoyance.... More

When we arrived at the very crowded Alkmaar Cheese Market (huge rows around the fences), one of the shows has just begun, in one of the many languages (from German to Spanish). It's a very well organized, colourful and vivid happening and everywhere you will see cascades of cheese. Also lots of stands where you can buy a wide range... More

The cheese market is a demonstration of a medieval cheese market, and as such is pretty unique. It could have been, perhaps, much more interesting if the actual selling process would be recreated, but this is not the case. There is no announcer who shouts out the bids, and no buyers who yell their prices. In short, there is no... More

Some have said to arrive early to get a seat or a good view.We arrived about 10.00am and after a few minutes we were able to get to the front. The commentary is in four languages and takes about 15 minutes to get through Dutch, German, English and French. It is worth listening to as it tells you what is... More

Mixed feelings on this 1/2 day excursion. We had seen Alkmaar Cheese Market on an episode of the Amazing Race and then did a little more research before visiting. The market is held only on Friday mornings. We got to the town about 8AM - way before anyone else showed up. This was nice, because it gave us a chance... More
