Torensluis is one of the wider bridges in the canal network of Amsterdam. Located on the bridge is a statue to Multatuli.
Certainly worth checking out on your visit to the city if you are in the area. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the vicinity.

This sculpture stands in tribute to Eduard Douwes Dekker, also known as Multatuli, a Dutch writer best known for denounced the abuses of colonialism in the Dutch Empire.
The sculpture is much larger than life and depicts Dekker from the torso up. The torso is roughly triangular, narrowing to wards the bottom and the whole sculpture seem to balance on the narrow base. A very contemporary expressive statue of a great man.

This is a monument to one of the Netherlands' great Men. We did not seek this out, as we had no idea he existed, but came across it by chance while walking around the streets of the city. And we were glad we did, as we learnt something of Dutch history! Multatuli is actually the pseudonym of Eduard Douwes Dekker, a 19th century writer and a man who held a number of government posts over the years. In fact he is considered as one of the greatest Dutch writers. During the time he held government posts he was serving in the Dutch East Indies, now known as Indonesia. While there he tried to expose the unjust treatment of the locals by the Dutch, and tried to improved their plight. However his efforts were not altogether successful. ANd here he is all those years later, vindicated for all those years!

There is an interesting contemporary statue of 19th-century Dutch writer Eduard Douwes Dekker (Multatuli) at Torensluis bridge crossing over the Singel River in Amsterdam.
This is the work of Dutch sculptor Hans Bayens and was erected in 1987 upon the 100th anniversary of the writer's death. Here you find a roughly shaped figure of an aged Multatuli including midsection in suit and the writers face which is aged. The statue stands at a forward angle upon a base with a large engraving of the writers name.
Have a quick look when passing through this area of central Amsterdam. Note that there are nice views of the Singel on both sides of Torensluis. This is worth making time for before or after viewing the Multatuli monument.

Thought to be one of The Netherland’s best authors, his statue can be found by the Singel Canal not far from the Central Station.

While enjoying the Sandeman's walking tour, we stopped by the statue of Eduard Douwes Dekker, popularly known as Multa tuli(his penname).Admired this writer as he very strongly criticised the Dutch colonial rule in the Dutch East Indies(modern Indonesia) in his novel Max Havelaar!!

On one of the steepest canal bridge is this impressive monument of an important Dutch writer. A lot of tourists stand next to it for pictures. On the canals are also nice cafés and their terraces to sit and enjoy the view. I like art in town which tells a story.

If you are walking towards the Jordaan part of town you will come across this statue of the dutch writer. Multatuli I am told means ' I have suffered much' . Nothing spectacular but it is on a nice stretch by the bridge on the canal. Just a little behind to the left is the narrowest home in Amsterdam.

The statue itself is interesting as a piece. It is on a canal bridge which has some cafes on, so a lovely place to stop for refreshments. Of course you’ll be paying premium prices her though.
