About
Hidden in the heart of the city centre of Amsterdam is a small wonder: Our Lord in the Attic Museum. Visitors will be going on a journey in a unique well-preserved canal house from the 17th century. Narrow corridors and stairs lead to historically decorated living quarters, kitchens and bedsteads, ending in what is literally the highlight of the museum: a complete church in the attic.

Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. Charming and atmospheric
This is a little diamond that might be missed by visitors hurrying through the city. The house is really lovely and delivers a real idea of life for a well off family living by the canals. The church itself is breathtaking despite its small size. Thanks to the brilliant staff. Included on the IamAmsterdam card, it should not be missed.

    Very interesting ..
.. that Catholics had to hide (= not display) their churches at one time. Lovely church but doesn't take long to go around and if you don't have e.g. an IAmsterdam card at 16 Euros is quite expensive.

    Lovely museum - very interesting
Really interesting and well presented museum. Very friendly staff on the front desk. The entrance is in an adjacent property and after watching a short film you walk through to the house below street level. The house itself is intersting to see although quite empty but the church is stunning. Really good audio guide once you've worked out how to use it (there were pictures to show you but we couldn't quite understand it).

Definitely worth an hour of your time!
Recommended by a work colleague and really glad we took the recommendation. Interesting to learn some history and see how the Dutch lived in times past. Excellently preserved. Very friendly and helpful staff.

    Worth seeing
First, obviously, be sure to look for the signs that say Museum Ons'Lieve Heer Op Solder and not expect to see it in English “Our Lord in the Attic” otherwise you will walk right past it. The front entrance appears modern but you quickly enter and “step back in time”. It is very interesting to see the inside of the house and then the church and one realizes the depth of faith to continue to practice their religion. Plan to spend an hour or so…

    Unique historical museum
Although Amsterdam has several world class museums, this was my favorite museum because it captures such a unique period of history. It is the only remaining hidden Catholic Church of the ~21 that existed when Catholics were prohibited from worshipping openly. I was struck by the ingenuity of the architects who built the church across the attics of three houses. When inside the church don’t miss the video showing the hidden pulpit.

    Fascinating story
This was a fascinating and well presented museum. A simple audio device that you could activate at various points along the tour told you all the details and I noticed there was a separate children's one. It is spread over several floors up and down lots of narrow stairs but lots of people of all ages were managing fine. Really interesting place to visit.

A wonderful exploration of a church hidden within a house, built in thec1660s.
We were fortunate enough to squeeze a quick visit to this fascinating Church into our travel experiences. We were amazed at the ability of the faithful to continue to worship, even when this was forbidden.! A true tribute, and the site is beautifully maintained. Attending staff were very pleasant and helpful and the audio system/ earpieces gave just enough information .... fascinating.

Visit a piece of hidden Amsterdam
One of the great unknown gems of Amsterdam. Well curated and beautifully maintained. Well worth your time. Your trip will place you near the Old Kerk, the Centraal Station, St Nicholas Basilica and not far from the Royal Palace.

    Wonderful visit - unmissable
One of the very best things we did in a 4-day packed programme in Amsterdam. Wonderful museum, beautifully restored and presented. A real flavour of life in a C17 canal house. Conversion of the upper floors into an exquisite church an absolute marvel.

This is a interesting place to visit in Amsterdam, different from the big art museums. It really brings to life the reality of the Protestant Reformation, and how life in the Netherlands used to be. The audio guide is excellent, and the museum is well organized. It took us about one hour to go through, and we were not rushing. Definitely a must-do while you are in Amsterdam.

Hidden away and surprising museum. We would never of known about it but was recommended by a friend ahead of our Amsterdam visit. Very good self audio tour. Cloakroom and cafe on site. Location is in between 'nine streets' and Royal Palace so easy to fit in your itinerary.

Thanks to Nina our guide on the Best Rated Walking tour we discovered this fascinating piece of history. The tour tells the story of Amsterdam’s secret churches taking you through a turbulent period in the city’s history. The only thing is don’t go if you don’t like steps as the name would suggest it’s quite a climb up to the sky but if you can make it its well worth the effort.

This was our favourite museum visit in amsterdam and we saw a lot. Great information and it is amazing that they managed to build it so long ago. It must have been brilliant to be able to worship there together when they weren't allowed to in public.

We almost missed it as the entrance is looking very modern with sign ‘Museum Ons'Lieve Heer Op Solder’. However once you finish with a film introduction and start the tour, you are guided to the old house which spans across 6 floors. The bottom 3 floors were used by an obviously well off family giving you an idea of their life during that period. The top 3 floors contain the hidden Catholic Church, one of 21 in existence, during Protestant reformation when Catholics were prohibited from worshipping openly. The church itself is unique - an elaborate baroque, built across the attics of three houses. Architecturally, it is interesting to see the enforcement and way it is constructed.

The audio tour is easy to use, a simple audio device can be activated at various points. However, note it is not wheelchair friendly as the lift is only available to the basement of the modern building where you watch the introduction prior of moving to old house.

Really enjoyed our visit to this museum - the audio tour was excellent and clearly explained the place without sharing too much information. Spent about an hour or so looking around and would recommend

This is a gem of a museum. Well worth visiting if you have ever wondered what lies behind the facade of a canal side house. You'll see kitchens, box beds, parlours and many, many tiny, winding staircases. The top three floors are a beautiful secret church. You can also see the pulley mechanism used to lift goods up the the attic warehouse, plus a section of the wooden foundations in the basement. The audio guide was excellent.

Our Lord in the Attic is situated in the centre of Amsterdam close to Centraal station.

It is a 17th century canal house which was converted to house a church on its upper floors. With the advent of the Dutch Reform Church, it was necessary for followers of other faiths such as Catholicism to worship in a clandestine manner, hence the creation of this church.

The lower floors contained regular rooms such as kitchens, dining rooms etc and portrayed an insight to life in the 17th century.

The church and altar were quite spectacular with all the associated paraphernalia which took me back to my days as an altar server !

We spent around 90 minutes here. There are quite a few stairs to negotiate so it might not be best for anyone with mobility issues.

Cost was €16.50 per person.

I very much enjoyed touring the house on the way up the church. The church itself is lovely and very interesting. The audioguide was very good and provided an interesting view of Amsterdam city life over several centuries. Definitely worth the price of admission!

This museum was an excellent find recommended by a friend. A really interesting and very well preserved and presented museum.
Navigating around the Museum was easy and the recorded guide easy to use and very informative.
We only interacted with staff at the reception desk but they were friendly, efficient and helpful.
It took about 60-90mins for our group to complete a tour of the museum.
