Historical Entrance Gate

Leprozenpoort is a small entrance gate near to South Church. It has historical value as the mentally ill people had been kept inside the area in the 15th century for a long time. It was near to Rembrandt House.

Remnant of the leper's house

The old leper's house was demolished, this gate the only remainder, restored and re-placed. The area behind it is residential now, nothing remains except the gate. Interesting history.

A walkabout in the city centre

Just went to the Rembrandt huis and we walked around and saw this. The Leprozenpoort is a beautiful gate which leads to a small square. Great walk towards Chinatown.

A Small Gate with a Long History

In 1970, the gate was moved from the original place to where it is now. It's just a small gate and nothing special behind the gate except houses. But when you're searching for its history, this gate has a long highly history. The gate was an entrance of the leprozenhouse, this house was also called as Lazarus house and had some other names. The house was exist from the 15th century and was used to keep people with leprosy away from the street. A few centuries later for keeping the Intellectual disability people and mentally ill (crazy) people. Don't waste your time finding this gate but when you visit the Rembrandt House, this gate is just diagonally across the museum.
