Top ways to experience IJ
The area
Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stretch of water behind Centraal station. Take the free ferry and go up the A’dam Lookout. Get yourself a drink at the restaurant /cafe on 19th /20th floor and a river view. You get a great view of this stretch of water.

A lot of activity along the river. The river cruise boats as well as ocean cruise liners dock in this area. Vey calm body of water. Great views of the river from the rooftop lounge located in the Doubletree Hotel.

To appreciate the IJ jump on a free ferry and see for yourself a body of water busy with freight moving on barges

The IJ is a river, the body of water in the Dutch province of North Holland. The IJ is connected to the North Sea to the west and the IJmeer ( lake) to the east. The IJ is known for being Amsterdam's water front. It is divided Amsterdam downtown with Amsterdam North. It's always busy with all kind of ferry, boats or ships. Once in the five years there is a big event "SAIL" for a few days. Ships from all over the world come to take a part of the show. It is such a big happening.

Had a nice walk along the Sumatrakade from Java Eiland, along IJ Eiland, to KNSM Eiland. Walked primarily along the quays on the IJ side, which can be a little bit boring at times, architecturally speaking, but then, we're here for the view across the IJ, right? With Amsterdam Noord just across the water, with Damen shipyards at the water front on the other side, the ferry shuttling back and forth, the little island in the middle of it all, there is always something to see. Recommended for a nice early evening walk.
