The area
Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Haarlemmerstraat as you can assume from the name is the road that leads to Haarlem from the centre of Amsterdam. It is easy to find from Centraal station and has lots of quirky shops selling cool things as well as some bars and restaurants as well.

It crosses canals and there are some great places to sit and chill out and admire the view. It's a bit touristy but well worth checking out on your visit to the city.

Quite a long but pleasant street near the Amsterdam Centraal Station. Lots of souvenir shops with a few bakeries and cafes and pubs. There is a nice open area near Singel with a few cafes/pubs.

This street is now the best shopping street of Amsterdam, and recently also the best of the Netherlands. You can find almost everything to see and buy. The shops are particular and also their products. You can find a lot of diferent shops that are all nice and worth to visit. There are also a lot of nice restaurants and cafe's, and special shops where you can buy nice food for lunch or as gift.

When you are in Amsterdam, take a walk on teh Haarlemmerdijk and Haarlemmerstraat, take something to eat, and enjoy the goods that are offered (books, cooking, clothing, chocolat, cheese, Dutch fish, restaurants, cafe, coffee shops, bags, traiteurs, filmhouse and many specialized shops....).

Today the Haarlemmerstraat is quite a hip and bohemian area with many nice boutique shops, specialty restaurants and coffeeshops (some of which do not only sell coffee as you would expect in Amsterdam). In 2012 it was voted "Best Shopping Street" in the Netherlands. It is slightly outside the oldest city centre of Amsterdam and hence not full of throngs of tourists, still just 5 minutes away from Central Station.

The Haarlemmerstraat once was the old road to Haarlem before the first big Amsterdam city centre extension or "outlay" (uitleg) of 1612. Then the road was brought inside the city walls and became the centre street of the oldest part of the Jordaan.

This is a cool street that is not that far from Centraal Station. Like the other reviewer has mentioned, it is basically "the" alternative street to shop on. One of the largest and best cheese stores in the city is on the corner right when you come into the Haarlemmerstraat, and they will let you taste everything, and then vacuum seal whatever cheese you want to buy so you can bring it back home with you. There are some great second hand stores where I was actually able to once find a very rare 4 piece authentic Fiesta Ware serving platter, which I still have and use to this day. If you are a camera nut, there is an amazing camera store where there are hundreds of rare cameras in the window and the shop, and the owner will talk cameras with you for hours. We stopped at a wonderful pastry shop where the pastry chef was just bringing out some freshly baked pastries. Since this is more of a neighborhood street than a tourist street, the prices are "regular" Amsterdam prices, not tourist prices. This is also a great street to be on Queen's Day, April 30. I love coming here.

Haarlemmerstraat is found west of Amsterdam Central and Singel and north of the Nine Streets shopping area of the Canal Rings. This is another interesting shopping and dining street with quicky an boutique shops, cafes, coffee shops and other interesting places to visit.

Haarlemmerstraat extends northwest becoming Haarlemmerdijk after passing Prisengracht. There you find more restaurants and retail shops.

Have enjoyed time spent on Haarlemmerstraat and a couple of the eateries along this street, including Vinnies during our most recent trip. Look forward to my next strong along Haarlemmerstraat.

Five minutes from Central Station, yet, a far cry from the tourist mile around the Dam and in the RLD. This street has it all, everything but high street shops. Don't forget admire the houses on this amazing street, especially at night. True, it has quite a few coffee shops, but don't get discouraged, that's part of this city. If you make it all the way to the end, the reward will be the best cinema in town - The Movies. At this semi-arthouse theater you will be able to recapture that old movie feeling. There are some great and diverse eateries here too, but for something special, head just one street down (or up) towards the canals and try the Belhamel. So, go but don't tell the tourists!

I really love the Haarlemmerstraat. If you want to have a real Amsterdam experience while shopping, go here. There are so many totally different shops, from nifty little art shops like Jolanta Izabela's Art Shop at nr. 100 where you can buy one of a kind handmade jewelry, clothes and sculptures, to shops where you can buy clothes made of natural fabrics "Natuurlijk" at 113 to Coffeeshops if you are so inclined to supermarkets, vintage clothes and interior decorating shops. I keep coming back because every shopping spree is different.

This is a street that has the Amsterdam Central Station on one end and Haarlemmerpoort on the other. A long street which has an abundance of cool cafes, restaurants, koffieshops and specialty food supply stores.

Prices aren't cheap but it's worth the extra quality or hard to find nature of the products. Jay's Juice Bar (Haarlemmerstraat 14) is fabulous for its healthy juices. Unlimited Delicious (Haarlemmerstraat 122) is not to be missed for its divine chocolates. Meeuwig & Zoon (no. 70) has an amazing array of oils and vinegars from all over Europe.

Only 500 meters away of the major trourist trap is a great place to meet the Real Amsterdam. Shops, pubs, restaurants where you can hide for weeks and not get bored.
