Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Peter was personable, very interesting and casual in his approach. We had to slow down a bit because my husbands leg started to hurt and Peter was so patient. Very knowledgeable about the topic and good at answering questions. Shared fascinating first hand family experiences with Germany in the war. Thanks so much, Peter!

I went on this walking tour over a year ago but never got round to posting a review until now. I have kept reminding myself to do it because it was brilliant and it certainly deserves the credit that I am giving it. Myself and my two friends were an unusual crowd in that we were in our early twenties and should have probably been in the many bars but we decided to do this as our bit of 'culture'. There was only three of us plus the tour guide so a small group, but that didn't mean he only gave us half a show. It lasted two hours, was very informative, he showed us pics of 1940 Amsterdam, and took us right round the city even suggesting restaurants and places to go out. He was a very nice guy, easy to chat to and ask questions. Quite frankly was the best thing we did during our time in Amsterdam!

My wife and I did participated in this tour at the end of May. We had Peter as our guide.
The tour began promptly at 10:15 at Ann Frank's Huis (though it is not part of the tour).
Several weeks prior to the tour Peter sent us a number of articles about Amsterdam during the War. They were all quite interesting and a thoughtful way of getting us oriented to what we would learn during the three hour tour.
Peter is an expert in this part of Dutch history. The occupation, the resistance, the collaborators, and, what happened to the Amsterdam Jews are all part of the tour. Peter supplements the information with pictures from WW11. He showed us the pictures at or close to the spot where they were taken during the War.
The tour is limited to 6 people and there is a break of 15, 20 minutes along the way for refreshments and bathroom.
An added bonus is that the tour takes you across central Amsterdam, from one end to the other.
The tour concludes at the Jewish museum and Portuguese synagogue, so for those interested, it is a great opportunity to visit both these sites as well.
In summary, we would recommend this tour, particularly if you are interested in the subject matter, or, if you would like to learn about it.

I was thrilled when I received an email back from Peter that he was going to give a tour on the afternoon I had to spend in Amsterdam. (NOTE: The Trains/Tram from Schiphol are easy to navigate - the HARD part is trying to use the ticket machines or even find one! Give yourself plenty of time.)

Due to my own fault, I took the wrong tram to get to the walk. As I was almost 30 minutes late, I called Peter and he was gracious enough to walk back so I could join him and the other traveller. I was so appreciative.

This walk is part history, part sightseeing and most importantly, having a chance to discuss almost any topic with Peter. He is extremely knowledgeable about this subject and you do get to see all of the highlights. What was unexpected and welcomed was the information Peter had sent before the walk (HINT: print it out and read it before - I had a chance to read it on my flight over.) Being able to have an understanding beforehand...then to see the locations made it even more interesting. Peter is an excellent guide and a very interesting fellow just to have a conversation with.

Our walk was on a bright, sunny yet windy Sunday. (HINT: make sure you layer your clothes - always good to be able to peel off rather not have enough.) Walking through the streets of Amsterdam when everyone is out and about allows you the chance to get "up close and personal" with Peter's tour. We commented several times that we couldn't have had the same experience if we had take a boat on the canal or a tour bus. (HINT: wear comfortable walking shoes.)

I highly recommend this walk. I would suggest you try and reserve at least 2 weeks out as he does not do this every day. While it is a rather sobering topic, it is amazing way to see a part of Amsterdam's history.

Definitely the best thing we did during our short stay in Amsterdam. On the day of our walk it was just my wife & I and another couple, and Peter was great. Not the type of guide who just goes through the motions in a bored manner, he is enthusiastic about the subject and likes to interact with his walkers, encouraging questions and also pointing out things of general historical interest about the city. At the end of the walk we felt that we knew a lot about Amsterdam that even the people who live there are probably unaware of. He is also a source of knowledge about where to eat etc. and when we got home he had e-mailed 46 pages of information to us covering all aspects of the route we had taken. Take the walk - you won’t be disappointed !

Our guide Emelie was very knowledgeable and we learnt a great deal during the tour. I particularly enjoyed comparing the photographs taken during WW2 with the present day sights; for example seeing the SS building in Dam square and the Dutch Nazi parties rallies in Dam square before World War Two had even begun! We also were told a lot about Anne Frank and shown her original house (not the Anne Frank huis where the museum is; that was her secret annexe) and the tour had a very shocking end at the deportation centre where we were told a moving story about Emilie’s own mother, who luckily was one of the few to escape. In conclusion it was very interesting and quite sad at times, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in history.

I had no idea Amsterdam had been under Nazi Occupation for five long years. Emilie brought the history of this time into perspective for us. She engaged the other members of our group and invited their input which really added to the experience. Emilie also shared her own family story with us which keeps these important stories so relevant.
I would highly recommend Emilie’s walking tour !

For any visitor to Amsterdam who appreciates history this walking tour is a "must". Peter Schaapman is not just a guide -- he is a historian who loves and appreciates his city -- and helped us learn more about a tragic past. We were the only two on the tour so there was plenty of time for questions and discussion. He never takes more than 6 - his price is a bargain. Although the topic can be depressing Peter has a good sense of humor and is a good host to this city.

As World War II fades from personal memory this tour reminds us of bleak past that must never happen again.......and this tour also inspires us with stories of resistance and individual acts of courage.

I spent 4 days in Amsterdam walking and taking public transit everywhere. I felt after 3 days that I had done and seen everything Amsterdam had to offer. On my last day I decided to take a tour with Peter and regret that I did not do it first. Peter showed me both places I had seen and not seen. However; once he explained what I was looking at and its significance it suddenly become so much more important and fascinating to look at. I felt as if I did not totally appreciate it the first time I saw it.

I used to live in Amsterdam. I walked tgose streets. I have seen the pictures and video footage. But it is a very different experience to see the iconic picture that you know and be told that you are now standing on the exact spot where this picture was taken. Suddenly the street or location got an extra significance. I will never be able to walk past those locations without thinking "this is where the resistance people arrested two Germans" or "This is where the Nederlandse SS had its recruitment office" (to name but two examples). All this thanks to the very knowledgeable guide, aremd wit a book with many, clear prints of what I consider to be iconic photos.
I learned a lot and I can only highly recommend this city walk.
