Recently I surprised my other half and flew us to Amsterdam for the Operation Market Garden tour! Murk was our guide and we had him all to ourselves. Murk really knows his stuff...he has a wealth of knowledge on the subject area and also plenty of really interesting war stories to keep you engaged throughout the tour. He is also very likeable and easy to get in with so all in all, we had a wonderful time. I couldn’t recommend him more highly. PS. If you pick the 2 day trip, you will also get to stay in a very quaint Dutch B&B overnight (incl in total price) whee the food is just amazing! Thanks so much Murk! This trip won me several brownie points :) Íde

My son and I participated in the 101st Market Garden Tour in October 2019-what an amazing experience! We started the day in Amsterdam, where Murk picked us up at the hotel, and began the scene setter. Murk provided an excellent overview of the battle and the context of the war from both the Allies (to include the Dutch Resistance) perspective and the German perspective. We started the battlefield tour by going to each of the drop zones and touring each of the bridges that the 101st were tasked with taking. Murk absolutely is an EXPERT-providing strategic and tactical insights. We used battle maps to trace routes and to stop at key points throughout the day. We ended the day in Utrecht, where my son and I spent the evening. I provide my highest recommendation that you take this tour and you request MURK-what a treat!

We visited Arnhem with a group of seven. As we also wanted to explore some of the area on our own, we asked Murk Dijkstra to prepare a one-day tour with an itinerary covering Arnhem and its surroundings. Mr Dijkstra provided an excellent tour, taking us first to Nijmegen and the surrounding drop sones, then to the Grave bridge, and finally back to Arnhem, where he guided us around the landing zones, Hartenstein Hotel and Arnhem itself. Mr Dijkstra is highly knowledgable about Operation Market Garden and the battle of Arnhem. He uses many photos and maps in his presentation, and also provides a lot of details on episodes and persons participating in the battle. We learned a lot new about Operation Market Garden and had a great day. We are planning our next tour to be to the Ardennes, and are hoping to book another tour with Mr Dijkstra.

My daughter engaged History Tours in September 2019 from the usual internet search. She has little interest in WW2 and the two of us did a one day private 'custom' tour which Murk compiled on scant info - Overloon Museum, Arnhem and what ever else he could fit into the time! The Overloon Museum was brilliant but being distant took a fair chunk of the day. Nevertheless, Murk was able to cover the landing grounds of the 82 US Airborne, the battlegrounds at Nijmegen and then into Arnhem where we followed the path of Major Frost from the landing grounds, through Oosterbeek and to the Arnhem Bridge. Murk went out of his way to involve my daughter in a sensible (ie not zealot like manner) backing up actual locations with maps and photos. He turned what threatened to be a boring day into a learning experience which she enjoyed. Murk was flexible enough to detour if we expressed an interest in some aspect but also not overpowering by bombarding you with history. If you showed some level of knowledge he would compliment it with interesting facts but not recover known ground. Stopping for photos was no problem. His English was near perfect (but he has yet to master Australian slang!). A great view of the pretty Dutch countryside was a bonus. History Trips is thoroughly recommended! I would definitely engage Murk again for my next European visit as he covers the Ardennes, other battles and other eras also. The tour was also value for money. And yes you could do this sort of trip yourself if you are very organised but the locations don't all fit in with public transport routes / timing and the distances mean there is no way it could be done in one day without a car. Also for those with an interest in the British Airborne, I suggest you watch the doco-movie "There's is the Glory". It was filmed in 1946 in the wreckage of the Arnhem area using actual British combatants re-enacting their experiences (no professional actors). Many of the buildings still exist!
