Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

I attended the Sunday morning service, which was conducted in Dutch. I did this so that I could obtain the full flavor of the religious residents of this decadent city. I only understood a few words in the Dutch language, but it didn't matter as I knew the biblical readings the priests were presenting. This was a good experience for me as so much of what I encountered was in position to the words presented in this church.

The Noorderkerk (North Church) is a wonderful example of the Dutch architecture of churches from the seventeen century. It was built in 1623 by the architect Hendrick Keyser, to be a Protestant church. AS such, it has for instance clean walls, since Protestant churches don't have images as the Roman Catholic churches have. The building has as its centre a wooden pulpit and in one of its sides a wonderful organ (from the nineteen century) bolt around one column.

The church was renovated at the end of the 90s and was re-opened with the presence of the Queen Beatrix. My friend told me that many of the seats are still wood from the seventeen century.

I consider myself privileged since I had the opportunity to visit the church with a friend who is a volunteer guide there.

The church is open basically on Saturdays and Sundays. It is a vivid place for social gatherings, bringing together from kids to adults to seniors. Everybody is welcomed, even if its not a religious person. On Saturdays there are places for seniors to have a chat and coffee, for kids to have many different activities, there are guided tours for tourists that have interest in knowing the history of the place and meetings for people who wants to have a Socratic discussion on social and economic themes. The church also has a high quality musical program all over the year and special program for Christmas.

On Saturdays there is a market in the square in front of the church and the movement is intense. On Sundays it seems yet more intense, since there are then religious services.

During the visit I realised that the floor, as in many churches from the middle ages, is actually all covered of tombs where there are in average 5 people buried from old time rich families from Amsterdam. A bit scary, but history!

The church is a gem and volunteers to help their work are welcome I understood.

The square in front of the Noorderkerk is transformed into a bustling farmer's market on Saturday. Many of the stands sell organic produce. Of special note are the breads and cheeses. Also, look for the stand that sells only mushrooms. It has a great selection of some very exotic mushrooms and they sell a mixture that works great in salads and omelets. On Mondays there is a flea market. The quality of goods can be questionable but it is very popular with locals.

If you have seen the Anne Frank huis, continue on the Prinsengracht to the heart of the Jordaan. Around the church is a market on Saturday with biological food and "antiques". The Church itself dates back to 1621 and is a fine example of "Protestantism in stone": simple but magnificent.

The north market located at the North Church is open on Saturday's and if you are in Amsterdam on a Saturday this is a "must see" destination. The market offers a great variety of cheese, bread and vegetable vendors. If you like fresh oysters you can find a great selection, everything from local (north sea) oysters to Irish and other types, always fresh and always delicious. There is also a great wild mushroom stand that is amazing. Try the cheese and bread stalls as well. You won't be disappointed, it is not a huge market and can be done in about an hour so will fit well into your visit without consuming an entire day.

Noorderkerk is a small Protestant church in the northern area of Jordaan, along the Prinsengracht. While there isn't much to see within the church, it is interesting from an architectural point of view. Opening hours 10am to 6.30pm (October 2016).

This church was built between 1620-23 by Dutch architects, Hendrick and Pieter de Keyser. It is symmetrical and laid out in the shape of a Greek cross, demonstrating Protestant ideals over traditional basilica shape and design of other Hendrick de Keyser churches like Westerkerk and Zuiderkerk. The exterior can be viewed nicely from the Noorderkerk market grounds just outside the church and by walking around the building.

The interior of Noorderkerk is very simple with white walls and ceilings devoid of painting and decor, tall and narrow windows with clear panes, simple iron chandeliers, pulpit and a centre stall area where services are held. The organ is presently covered, seemingly for repair. You can take a quick walk around and see everything in just a few minutes.

In the end, Noorderkerk is a simple church that is fine to visit if you plan to be in this area of Jordaan and enjoy historic buildings. There is a open food market, Noordermarkt, held in the space just outside the church on Saturdays. A combined visit is sensible and convenient.

We have been to the Noordermarkt, right outside of the Noorderkerk, many times. This year was the first time the church was open. There was a church group selling coffee inside. We took the opportunity to visit the church. It is very sparsely furnished, painted all in white. We were glad we were able to finally to see the interior of this church. There was no admission fee, but I do not think it is open for visits on a regular basis.

In the Jordaan, the originally 17th century labourers district, but fvery trendy now. On the noordermarkt with the weekly farmers market and Lapjesmarkt. In the middle between the Westerstraat and the Lindengracht. Together about 50 restaurants within less than 10 mins walking distance.
The curch is abeautifull example of Dutch Protestant Churches from the 17th century, and actually the first built protestant church after the reformation (early 17 century)

Great building but one only sees if from outside. The last of Keyser's buildings it is in stark contrast to the westerkerk down the canal. Saturday and monday mornings are bustling with market. Go then and enjoy the exterior of the church.

This was the most amazing organic market I have ever visited! The choice of different breads, cheeses, mushrooms (!) and all sorts of vegetarian goodies was amazing! I wish I could transport this market to Antwerp once every so often ;-)
