Despite being so central the zoo has an air of tranquility. Animals in larger enclosures than I have seen in UK zoos. Used an iamsterdam card for entry but would be well worth the full entry price!

We came to the zoo for our anniversary! The zoo was amazing, we enjoyed our day out. Esp loved the butterfly area as the butterflies were flying around us, it was just beautiful. Staff helpful and friendly.

I visited the Artis Zoo using the iAmsterdam card and it was definitely worth it - the zoo is just the right size and the animals have nice enclosures. I particularly enjoyed seeing the baby elephants who will soon have a new enclosure and walking around the beautiful butterfly house

A must see when visiting Amsterdam. The Zoo is well sign posted, the animals have spacious cages and it's great value for money.

I wasn't decided if to visit it or not but in the end I am very glad that I went to this location. It is,definetly, one of the best zoos in Europe. You can arrive easily by taking any metro which will drop you at Waterlooplein. I recommed you to buy combined tickets (Micropia + ARTIS Zoo) for good discounts... More

Well you pay for the entrance more than 20€ and you can see the whole zoo in one and a half our. It's nice but i don't think it's worth the price.

Nice spacious zoo, interesting animals. Didn't get to see it all but personal highlights were the sea lion show and the elephants. €21 entry was about average and maps are €2 (funding for the new elephant enclosure). Looked like an interesting aquarium, insectarium etc. Really nice cafe/diner too ("Too tigers?") very airy, would be lovely in the summer

Visited this zoo just a couple of days ago; there was a large number of interesting animals so it was a good job we got a map! There was plenty information about each of the species exhibited, the zoo seemed very clean and the staff were friendly, however the only thing that let the zoo down was the size of... More

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
