This beautiful, oasis of calm is situated just off Kalverstraat, one of the busiest streets in the whole of Amsterdam, yet as soon as you step through the gates, you are immediately transported into another world. The traditional houses, each with tiny gardens and picket fences, surround a well manicured lawn. Although the last true Beguine died in 1971, they... More

We popped in here briefly. It is a quiet oasis in the middle of a busy shopping area. Well worth seeing.

We found this hidden gem of Dutch history. It was like walking back in time, and I'm so glad we visited. You could easily walk past it and not know it is there. If you visit respect the request for silence and be aware that this is the ladies homes.

This hidden square was once a place for women to live apart, in a contemplative religious setting, from what was a male dominated society. It's still a place for single women, and retains an atmosphere of peace and calm that is only a few steps from the hustle of one of Amsterdam's busiest squares. It's well worth a visit, as... More

Of you want to get away from the noise this is the place to go. A garden and church surrounded by apartments which were set up by devout women. Today, the area is still occupied by women only. Amazing church, the wooden house, quiet area. Don't miss it, right in the middle of the city.

You easily walk by, because from the outside there are only 2 entrances to this very old court in Amsterdam. But when you step in, you experience as if you were back in time. The small houses and the church date from the 15th century or earlier. It is really a relief to spent a moment here before rushing into... More

First, you have to find it, once you found it, enjoy! Such a quite environment in the heart of the city, I always like to go here when I am close by. Still used as housing for women, it is a little oasis in the city. Go there, it is in every tourist guide, you should be able to find... More

Staying in Centrum

Neighbourhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
