About
Located in a passageway between the Kalverstraat and the Begijnhof it is possible to admire 15 substantial paintings. These are portraits of the Amsterdam Civic Guards from the 17th Century. Part of, though not actually in, the Amsterdam Historic Museum, this is probably the only place in the world where paintings are displayed in he open air, with only a glass roof to protect them.

Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

This is a weird little place but lovely if you can find it. Beautiful paintings in a passageway only sheltered from the elements by a glass roof.
It's the surprise that makes it worthwhile. And its free.

It is always be fine to cross this passage when I was in the city centre. Not only quicker walking from Kalverstraat to the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal to catch the tram but it is also enjoyable passing all those artworks. This gallery is part of the Amsterdam Museum. There are some paintings of the golden age but also modern paintings. One painting shows all the public figure of amsterdam in caricature. Take a break at the museum cafe, at the courtyard you can see other artworks. It's worth passing this gallery as it's free of charge

Along Kalverstraat, just near the Amsterdam Museum is the Schuttersgalerij (Civil Guards Gallery). It’s a thoroughfare that serves as a small gallery. There are a number of artworks in various mediums, some of the pieces are “Golden Age” paintings; some are very modern, some shows the Dutch sense of humour. Then you have the 1650 amusement park wooden statues of David, Goliath and Goliath’s shield bearer. It’s something a bit quirky, but what else would you expect of Amsterdam? Oh it’s free. Photos are OK too.

This small free gallery is located in a passage that's a part of Amsterdam's Historical museum. It offer's up a small selection of Dutch works. Not in my opinion a must visit. Worth a look if you're visiting the museum.

Always include this short walk in any walking tour with visitors to the city, some wonderful paintings, gives enough material to talk about the city and its growth over the centuries. is indoors so even better if raining or very cold !
No entrance to pay so gives a taste of the wonderful portait paintings of the Golden age.

If you don't have time for the adjoining Amsterdam Museum, this is a quick, free, and easy way to get a dose of Dutch history, tradition, and art through the institution of civic guard portraits.

Went back to the Schuttersgalerij in October 13 with my 2 teenage sons, their first trip to Amsterdam, and we were pleased to see that there are now, just outside the gallery/Amsterdam Museum, a set of mini Iamsterdam letters.
The lads had fun posing infront, and on them, before we spent about 20 mins in the gallery and then in the Mokum cafe for a pancake and a hot chocolate.
Next time we will defo try the museum too, but still worth the little detour from Kalvorstraat to get a bit of free culture and now to see the mini letters.

Not many places in Amsterdam are free but this is one; Had tried to locate it on a previous visit and didnt realise we had walked right past the entrance - thought it was part of the Museum of Amsterdam that is right nextdoor -and I mean, the entrance is the next door, it is on the same site.
The galleries is basically a large greenhouse type of passage, with 17th century art on one side and modern twists on it on the other. Signage is in English and Dutch, so you understand what you are seeing.
After a 10 - 15 mins here go have a drink, or some lunch at the museums cafe called Mokum I think, very nice.
Access to the gallery is easy, automatic door and carpeted walkway over a cobble or heringbone brick floor. Cafe is accessible and has an accessible loo - costs 50 cents if not eating in cafe.

Half of this hallway has very nice golden-age paintings similar in style to those in the Rijksmuseum. The other half of the hallway has modern art.
The space is small. We spent 15 minutes casually exploring the space, reading just a few of the labels / plaques.
If you are in the area, you should check it out. It's free and it's open daily 10-17 (5pm).
