Neighbourhood: Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is as historically significant as it is perennially popular. Whether you’re a history buff, architecture enthusiast, shutterbug, or fashionista, odds are you’ll find the Amsterdam you're looking for while roaming around the Grachtengordel (Canal Ring). A brilliant place to get lost in a moody meander and a key component to any sightseeing trip to Amsterdam, this area's major draws include the Anne Frank House, the Bloemenmarkt floating flower market, an enviable assortment of independent boutiques along De Negen Straatjes, and of course all of Grachtengordel’s lovely canals and bridges.

- Sightseer324193244091 contributionIt was okay. This museum was alright. It was interesting to see the instruments of torture, but there wasn’t that much information about them. Took about 15 minutes to go through the whole thing, and we were going slow. I don’t think this needs to be on your Amsterdam to-do list if you’re visiting. Not really worth it in my opinion.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 January 2024
- ABB_LonLondon, United Kingdom973 contributionsIt’s ok - should be half the costIt took us about 8 minutes to walk around this museum, it’s very small. Some of it is quite interesting, but it isn’t worth the €9.50 per ticket fee. Around the €5 mark feels more appropriate. If I had read the reviews before going I would have skipped it!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2024
- Sue B11 contributionsAmsterdam Torture Museum, small, interesting, worth popping in if you’re in the areaDespite some negative reviews on here me and my 11 year old decided to turn up and find out for ourselves. It is a small museum and if you’re on your own and a fast reader you’ll get round it quickly. It took us about 25/30mins. We read and looked at everything and talked about why people would choose to do such awful things to another human. All the exhibits were well labelled in numerous languages. It was interesting, I thought the price was fine and I would suggest going if you are in the area.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 August 2024

Admission charge is 7,50 EUR and it is more like a 30 minute tour through Middle Ages. Every exposition has it's own explanation in different languages and that's quite informative. For a short trip during bad weather a nice exposition to see.

Very good, different from other museums as the exhibition were much closer and most of them were without any glass/other protection, so you could inspect it closer. The descriptions were fine most of the time, albeit some were more about the circumstances of use rather than the actual use. I recommend going in there to experience the medieval mindset. Visit the museum if you have a spare hour of free time.

My son and I only had 6 hours in Amsterdam from UK, we were on a mini cruise. We pre-booked the museum visit, it was easy, just showed the booking and in we went. Compact museum, lots of information on the walls about the exhibits, some exhibits I had never heard of before, so it was educational. We were able to get around it pretty quickly, would have stayed longer to read absoloutley everything had there been time. Would go again if we had more time.

I like this kind of creepy things like jails as museums, etc. This museum isn't so big at all, but the descriptions of each toture object are very interesting. Once you buy a ticket on a specific date, you can go there at anytime on that date.

I thought this would be gruesome. It wasn’t. It was claustrophobic and boring. I don’t want to have to stand reading information on poorly lit boards. I wanted sound effects and blood. Having said that, humans are a nasty lot! Some of the things they did to people were twisted and sick!
Seriously, if you’re claustrophobic don’t bother, it’s very small rooms with stairs up and down. I made a swift exit and waited in the entrance for my party.

Really nice museum. For just 7.50€ (student) the exhibition was interesting enough. Found out new things and seeing them in life size is pretty great in my opinion. Some of the texts were lacking some more information about the method, however it did give some insight into the period. Definitely would recommend to visit for a quick look, if you've got a spare hour.

I love history, so was interested in checking out this museum. It only took about 45 minutes to complete (and that was me taking my time with it by reading everything). It wasn't expensive, so I wasn't disappointed by how small it is. If you enjoy history and learning, I'd say, "give it a go."

It's a really tiny museum, I think we were in there for max. 15min. The torture stuff is very interesting but it isn't really explained, so you have to find out for yourself how it was used. Perhaps you could use paintings or videos, which show when these torture methods were used. I liked that the museum really matches it's energy with the torture stuff.

I love history and this sort of museum should be up my street but everything about it was lacking. The presentation was poor, I found the information given uninteresting. The exhibits were a little sad, there was no real depth to any of the exhibits. I honestly have had more information on a youtube video. I would save the euros and spend them elsewhere.
They have missed the market on two fronts:
1. History
2. Gore
Either would have been good
