Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

A very VERY short street but what a lovely place to check out local artist IMO. It was a lovely sunny morning when i came across this place on my walk from my hotel NH City Center towards the Dam Square. The stall holders whom many are the artist themselves is happy to chat about thier wares.

Didn't plan to come to this place but when I saw there was something on the square, I decided to take a look. I was glad to stop at this open air art market. It's small square full of artwork such as : painting, hand-made jewelry, ceramics, hand painted scarf, postcards, small statues made from paper etc. It's recomended for one who likes to see art. It is open on Sunday. The location is easy to find. Tram number 1, 2, 5 will stop at Spui.

Every Sunday there is an outdoor art market: paintings, jewellery, pottery, postcards, etc, by local artists. There is a great deal of variety and originality on display and well worth seeing. The price ranges will suit most pockets from small cards to large paintings. Most of the artists have their own websites so if you can't decide on the day you can visit or email them again later. This relaxed market isn't as intimidating as visiting a studio or gallery and is so original.

A section in the center of the city, a bit square, where some modern art for sale is on display. Lots of places to eat and drink around, trams come by.

If you are visiting attractions like Begijnhof and Amstedam Museum on a Sunday, you might want to check out the open art market held at Spuiplein, just to the south of Begignhof.

From 10am to 6pm local artists setup stalls and display paintings, drawings, handmade jewellery and other artistic items for purchase. It seems stalls are manned by the artists themselves and they seemed happy to discuss works with visitors.

During my visit, there were some nice works on display, making this a nice potential stop even if you are only interested in browsing. Must have been 20-25 stalls so perhaps allow for 20-30 minutes browsing time depending on what type art you like.

The art market at Spui is a nice break from normal sightseeing for those who plan to be in the area on Sundays.

I much preferred this town square to the much more well-known Dam Square. Full of shops, bookstores, bars and restaurants and also a fun art show on Sundays, this is a great place to grab a glass of wine (or to eat in nearby Kantjil en de Tiger) and relax. Very historic and some great architecture.

In August my wife and I visited this open air art market on Spui Square. There were few artists there and we toured all the booths in about 10 minutes. Do not make this your destination, but somewhere to stop for a few minutes on your way to or from somewhere else. Nearby are the Beguinhof and the Amsterdam Museum, both well-worth visiting. Actually, every tourist attraction in central Amsterdam is within walking distance. On other days the square is used by other markets, such as second hand booksellers.

The whole of Spuismarkt is a bit of a flea market, but the section set aside for art features local artists displaying the best of their works. Almost all of them are remarkable. But of course, some may appeal to you and others will not.

Local work by local artists is *exactly* what we wanted to bring home with us. Both as gifts for others and keepsakes for our home. We came *this* close to buying some jewelry. But the huge yellow poster by the painter known as Mr. Yellow called out to us more, and it now hangs on a wall in our home. We also bought several hand-carved gifts for our children, but the amazing hand-carved lizard on a tree stump ... oh no, I just can't figure out how to pack it safely into our luggage or carry it onto the plane. Well, there ya go ... local art is sold as much to local residents as to visitors. Our son would have LOVED it.

The Spui market has the art section, an amazing section dedicated to books and books and even more books. Plus the average local flea market.

But the most important feature of the art market--for travelers who are on a tight schedule--is that it's open on Sundays! Most of the markets are closed on Sundays.
