Disappointed that you can't actually go into the windmill, but in a lovely spot overlooking the eastern docklands.

This is an old windmill now doubling as a pub and brewery. They have at least 10 of their own drafts on offer along with countless bottles. Friendly and helpful staff make choosing beer easy, also necessary to avoid the extra strong brews, as high as 9%. Interesting snacks also on offer.

Even though the location is off in a different direction, away from the rest of the places you'd probably be visiting, this is a must-visit. It's a wooden windmill located in the city! And it makes for some amazing photographs during sunset. What's more, it comes with a microbrewery attached. I skipped the Heineken Experience boat ride as I'd had... More

Elevated to catch the wind above the houses. There is a good small brewery nearby with real Amsterdam beer.

In Amsterdam, there are souvenir windmills in every shop, pictures on every postcard, and on every piece of china. There are a monument to ingenuity and engineering marvels of the past. This large mill is very impressive from the outside, however that's as far as the tour goes. There is no tour. Inside it is a private residence, as far... More

Stopped by to see a genuine dutch windmill. Building itself was interesting but the blades were off and didn't have the full effect. Next to the river and was still pretty cool! When the blades are back, it will be much nicer. Stop for a beer too, sit outside and enjoy

We went to see the De Gooyer Windmill because we could not visit Holland and not see a Windmill, and I have to say it was very impressive, it is a little further out of the centre than most attractions but is easy to get to via the number 10 tram which you can catch from by the Rijkmuseum and... The windmill itself is currently missing its blades (mid-October 2016). There are two cafes / biergartens adjacent to choose from. It's a nice place for a bier, especially on a Saturday afternoon when it was very lively. Two pils were 5E.

If you've got time and enjoy a walk, this can be taken in on a self-guided tour, linking up with several other areas that you would like to see. Not a relaxing spot, though, busy and built up. More of a see it, move on affair.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
