Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A quiet respectful corner of a public park sits a monument to a time we must never forget for it's inhumanity towards the Jewish people. Flowers are freshly laid, pebbles lie along the glass words signifying the monument.

It cannot bring emotion, a silence nor a moment of reflection. The mirrors lie cracked to signify that the sky will never be intact for such an atrocity to have happened. Less we forget.

The Auschwitz Monument stands in tribute to all of those that were killed at the Auschwitz concentration camp. The memorial is well hidden in Wertheimpark and easily missed if not looking for it.

The memorial features six broken mirrors laid out on the ground inviting viewers to reflect upon the atrocities with the words, “Never Again Auschwitz” inscribed on the monument.

As much as I admire the aims of the memorial, the monument isn't particularly proportionate the the scale of deaths and lack of prominence by it's location makes it awkward to visit and I went out of the way to pay my respects.

PROS
* Important historical memorial
* Subdued monument sunken in the ground- reflecting the tragedy
* Creative broken glass carries significant message
* Solemn memorial as there are ashes of incinerated human remains interred in the edifice
* Located in the old Jewish Quarter and near to the Jewish Museum, Portuguese Synagogue, the soon-to-be-opened Holocaust Museum and not far from the Dutch Resistance Museum
* Located in lovely quiet Wertheimpark

CONS
* Not well enough known or located

"I VISITED THIS PLACE..."
... because I wanted to specifically see this monument and to honor the memory of those Dutch Jews who were brutally murdered and lost their lives because they were Jews.

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It's free

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Of course

ADVICES
I suggest going a bit out of your way to see this memorial and to honor the victims

A monument to the victims of Auschwitz camp is located in a lovely park near the National Holocaust museums. When one thinks of a monument, one pictures a structure with height, This one is made up of broken mirrors that lie flat on the ground and reflect the sky. Buried underneath is an urn filled with ashes collected at Auschwitz. Its a low key but moving place.

This monument is quietly tucked away in the corner of a park (Wertheimpark), and in fact we first walked by it and didn't even realize it. This small monument reflects the agony associated with both Auschwitz, but also the Holocaust in general.

The monument is right in the middle of the former Jewish quarter, which still has many Jewish related buildings/sites. It's a must see in the sense that the designer (Jan Wolkers) has created great symbolism with this monument and if you want to have any feeling for what happened during WWII you need to see it. It's very easy to reach and for instance if you are going to visit the Artis Zoo, this monument is a 3 minute walk from the entrance of Artis.

The park is close to the botanical gardens. The Auschwitz Memorial is very small, but you must see it if you are there because when you read the plaque that explains what it is, your life will change. You will think about the sky in a different way.

It was part of a walking tour to stop here. The artist has done a remarkable job with this monument. Cracked panes of glass that reflect the broken sky are a poignant touch to an atrocity that cannot be forgotten or fixed. The head stone is where people place pebbles as a mark of respect as flowers die.

We visited early afternoon. The crowds were so bad tour groups were on top of each other that we couldn’t digest the information and sometimes lost our group. Definitely a must see, just choose your time wisely.
