Enjoyed a guided tour around this beautifully reconstructed wooden windmill which allows a glimpse of the inner workings of a fully functioning, wind driven windmill. - Cruiser0735684569186 contributionsWorking, windmill, a must see!Excellent Tour our tour guide spoke English and German, she was full of knowledge and history. This is a site/tourist attraction that you need to see. This is still a working mill, they produce flour there occasionally. All the facts and information were very informative. It’s a must.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 April 2024
- theclarkenGaithersburg, Maryland90 contributionsThe Windmill ExperienceI was with a group and they said they wanted to visit this museum. I was reluctant but went along with low expectations. I'm very glad I went - the museum was really good for two reasons. First, the explanation of how the windmill worked and was a major part of the economy was really well presented. Second, the windmill itself was in great condition. The structure is in great condition. It seems unlikely to happen, but I would have loved to see a sail being put on. Overall a great experience.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 August 2024

Every ½ hour there is a guided tour of this old mill. They explain how it was used over the years and now it is only an attraction, but the inside tour is very bice. As we were there, they set the sails open on the windmill and got to see the whole windmill spinning.
The tour guide speaks many languages and explains it to the group in their language. The stairways are narrow, but very safe.
There is also a video history to sit and watch showing the complete history of the windmill.

Fascinating educational tour of this historic windmill and of windmills’ role in Dutch history and development. We were the only ones on our tour, and our volunteer guide was incredibly knowledgeable, demonstrating using small models how different types of windmills worked and how they were reworked depending on what needed to be milled. It was awesome to see the huge sails and to learn about how the miller had to climb them to set the sails to catch the wind, and how the sail positions were used as messaging for the miller and community. Very worthwhile, especially for only 7.5 Euros each!

We did a guided tour of this working windmill which takes about 45 minutes.
The tour was run by a rather entertaining and funny dutch man.
This windmill is located in the city centre of Haarlem on the river front.
It was interesting to see wind turned into power so environmentally friendly.
This windmill was used from 1779 to 1832 for various uses such as mortar, tobacco, and flour.
In 1932 a fire destroyed the windmill.
In 2002 the windmill was restored to its former glory and is still operational but is now a windmill museum.
There is a store which sells souvenirs.

Should you ever visit Haarlem, we highly recommend to visit De Adriaan for different reasons.
Haarlem is a very nice place for walking and sightseeing and it's very likely to spot beautiful buildings and places on the way.
The windmill itself is an amazing landmark and subject for photos.
It's also possible to stop by the nearby pubs for a nice drink.

This is both a museum and a working windmill--they still grind flour here. Be sure and go on the guided tour; our guide was both knowledgeable and entertaining. The tour takes you up to a museum level and then up to the operating mill levels. You'll see fascinating scale working models of windmills and learn that windmills were used for more than just grinding grain. On the working levels you see and learn about the wind apparatus and the milling process, and along the way you'll learn about the history and operation of this windmill and others in the Netherlands. You'll enjoy this stop even if you know nothing or don't care about old industrial technology.

Fascinating guided tour which shows much about all windmills in The Netherlands. Working models and demonstrations bring it all to life. Make sure you watch the movie included in the very reasonable price of entry and guided tour. Also the view from the outdoor platform makes it all worthwhile.

This was our favourite activity we did in Haarlem! We did a 1hr tour, and the guide was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic (he was an apprentice miller himself so he knew a lot). We learned so much not just about the mill but also about the history of windmills and of the Netherlands. We got to go in and see the inside of the mill and all the fascinating displays. The tour was also great value for money. I highly recommend it!!

An impressively large flour mill, located on the Spaarne, near the Koepelvangen. Flour mill "De Adriaan" is named after Adrianus de Booys, who in 1778 was given permission to build a flour mill on the foundation remains of the demolished Goevroutoren (part of the fortifications). The Adriaan that we now see before us is in fact a replica of the 18th century mill. Because the original mill was completely destroyed during a fierce fire in 1932. Partly at the initiative of the people of Haarlem, the flour mill "De Adriaan" was rebuilt in the period 2000-2001, slightly larger than the 18th century mill. The Adriaan is a tower mill, which is lifted even further into the air by a large two-layer brick substructure. The result is an emphatically large and tall mill. Octagonal hull and hood are covered by vertical wooden parts. On the beard of the mill and on a facade stone next to the main entrance the original year of construction 1778, the year of the fire 1932 and the year of rebuilding. In the stone substructure there is space for receptions, weddings, exhibitions, etc. The mill is open for viewing (for details see the mill website). "Only" a replica, this mill .. but a beauty to see!!

Entrance at 7.50 euros per person. It is a guide who speaks in Dutch and English who tours the mill. You have to leave your bag at the bottom because you have to climb higher and higher into the mill and have your hands free to hold on! When you go back down, you go down the various stairs in reverse. You can go out to the 3rd floor of the mill to take photos.

How much time should I allocate to this attraction? Many thanks.

Get there early, especially if it is a sunny day, and give yourself about an hour or so for the tour and visit the surrounding area as well. It is well worth it.
