Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stumbled across this quite by chance on the way to the Frans Hals Hof museum. Part of the museum was closed due to preparations for a new exhibition soon, but what we did see was interesting. Having a museum card it didn't cost anything to get in.

This was an impromptu stop for us, but we enjoyed our 40 minutes here (the museum was about to close). We probably could’ve spent 60 or 90 minutes. The exhibit upstairs was devoted to the history of Haarlem, and it was nice that the panels were also in English (in addition to Dutch). The exhibits downstairs, however, were not in English, and so it was difficult to get much out of them.

This museum is one of the hidden treasures of Haarlem. If you want to see how the city came to become as it is now it is definitely worth a visit. Two rival cities during the Dutch Golden Age period - Haarlem and Amsterdam fought for their own right and, occasionally, with each other - for fame, power and influence. Current permanent exposition will take you through those ages to our modern times. Very cosy museum locatedon the same street just 50 meters from the Frans Hals museum! Another part of the museum hosts temportary expositions - the one I visited this summer had a fantastic photo selection from the 20th century; I guess it is still there until the end of October!

The Historisch Museum Haarlem could be regarded as one of the finest small museums in the Netherlands.
The museum has a significant collection which shows the rich history of Haarlem and its surroundings. In a cozy room you can watch a movie about the history of Haarlem and there is also a room full of historic items like potsherds, cans and a real executioner's sword. Moreover, Haarlem is a wonderful little town and has the advantage of being much less touristy and crowded than Amsterdam. In short, the Historisch Museum Haarlem is absolutely worth a visit.

In this month I went to the Historical Museum Haarlem (I am a regular visitor), a small but very interesting museum about the history of this wonderful town. A museum which you could easily walk by when you visit the most popular museum of Haarlem: the Frans Hals Museum. A pity, because you would definitely miss the first important step for understanding the historical value of Haarlem.
It shares its front door with the ABC (Centre for Architecture), but has its own distinctive character. In three different rooms the volunteers of the museum have created a good look into the history of the town. From Laurens Janszoon Coster (who, to the Haarlemmers, invented a way to print books in a large production) to the invasion of the Spanjards in 1572; its all there. The objects, the signs, the short (but very pleasing) introduction movie; all these elements are at work to give the visitor a good look into our history.
Every half a year the museum opens a temporary exhibition. Untill November 2011 the Historical Museum Haarlem presents "Een eeuw persfotografie in beeld" (A Century of Press Photography in Images), an overview exhibition about the Spaarnestad Photo-archive, one of the biggest collection of press photographies in the Netherlands. The exhibition extends of three rooms. The first room tells the visitor the story of its origins and production of magazines. The second shows a small collection of photos, based on some of the most important press photographers in the Netherlands and who were active in Haarlem. The last room shows a collection of the most recognizable and rare photos ordered in an index system which was build up to archive all the millions of photos from the Spaarnestad Photo Archive.
Every half a year the themes of the temporarily exhibitions changes from the upcoming of city parks to the damast from Haarlem, from the monumental cemetery of Kleverpark to the history of the many old taverns which Haarlem holds. These themes give a glance of the diversity the museum shows which is based on an ever changing history.
Historical Museum Haarlem will give the visitors to our wonderful town a very good insight into our history and a well made first step to know Haarlem just a little bit better.

This is an interesting little museum on the history of Haarlem. However, there is no English translation of the information, except for a quirky little film you can watch. If you don't speak Dutch you may not think it worth the 7 Euro entrance fee.

This is across the street from the Frans Hals Museum, and it was free since we had a MuseumKart for free access to 400 museums in the Netherlands. We just visisted solely to see the video and it was definielty worth it. Sit int he back row to see the 3D effects. Just ask at the front desk for English. The exhibits all looked to be in Dutch.

We've lived in the area for the past 15 years and today we acted the tourists. We were over the moon to have come here and made us feel very proud of the local heritage we knew nothing about. Lovely

A nicely laid out museum but there is very little English translation of most of the exhibits. There is an introductory film of the history of Haarlem which is shown in English but very little else.

We visited this museum because it was right down the street from the Frans Hals Museum and because the admission fee was included in our Museumkaart. I think Dutch people would appreciate this museum more than tourists. There was a special exhibit about Dutch women when we were there and I had only ever heard of a few of them. All the signage was in Dutch, so I did not learn anything about any of them. The women at the front desk were very nice and friendly and were appreciative that we had visited the museum.
