We really enjoyed stopping into this church during our time in Haarlem. It is absolutely gorgeous, particularly the massive organ (that Mozart played as a child). Definitely recommended!

One might think that St. Bavo is loved in Haarlem more than in Ghent, where he died and the cathedral is dedicated to him. After all, two churches are dedicated to the Frankish saint in Haarlem - the Kerk Grotto on the 16th-century Markt Grotto and the 19th-century cathedral. The rarest case. However, everything is simple. The church is Protestant, and the cathedral is Catholic, built when the oppression of Catholics in the Netherlands almost disappeared. To enter the Kerk Grotto, you need to go to a nearby store and pay 4 euros. For 4 vero you will see the traditionally boring Protestant white walls and tall columns rushing to the cedar vaults. But not everything is so bad. The church has beautiful carved choirs with coats of arms on the backs, large models of Dutch galleons hanging between the columns and an interesting gilded lectern in the form of an eagle cleaning feathers from 1510. And, of course, the richly decorated, the most beautiful, as they say in Haarlem, organ in Europe. It was built by Christian Muller in 1735, so that both Handel and the young Mozart would play on it in the same century. If you're lucky, you can find the modest grave of Frans Hals. I was unlucky... The rarest case. Two churches of St. Bavo is in the same Haarlem. The one in the Grote Markt is Protestant. It's almost like a naval museum. ..

The most imposing building on the Grote Markt is monumental Sint-Bavokerk, which is not an old church - it was built between 1895 and 1930. Unfortunately, it was closed at the time of my visit to Haarlem, so I was able to see its exterior only.

A beautiful church steeped in history. Must see the huge organ played by Mozart when he was just 10. Also played by Handel. Do not miss to have coffee at the quaint coffee shop inside the church served up lovingly and smilingly by Ms Anaken.

Beautiful church with a magnificent organ- so sorry we went out of season, as there were no concerts happening. Interesting art-work, both old and new, and quiet places to sit and contemplate.

While visiting Amsterdam, we took a day trip to Haarlem and visited a few locations. The Grote Kerk is located right on the Grote Markt, in central Haarlem. The immediate area is filled with numerous historic buildings (such as the Vleeshal).

Entry was a small fee, and the large interior of the church is typical for many Dutch churches of this period. Highlights in my mind included the model ships donated by shipping guilds, and a cannonball lodged in the wall from the Eighty Years’ War. Also, for lovers of collectible tokens, the church includes a vending machine for a St. Bavo coin in the Mémodaille Europe Collection.

Amenities included a restroom and a gift shop. Highly recommended for history and architecture lovers. A great place to relax.

Church was large. Two items stood out, the alter screen and the
organ pipes. Both were beautiful. otherwise, the church was plain.
Lots of clear “stained glass “ and modern designs. There was a short
organ concert during our visit. Either because of the selection of
music or the organ, it was underwhelming.

We were familiar with the facade from the many paintings of Haarlem featuring it and had seen some of the paintings of the interior, so we'd were curious what it was like inside. We were not disappointed from the majestic quietude to the impressive organ and to the other interesting features listed in the handy guide.

Haarlem's Grote Markt is totally dominated by this immense beautiful Gothic church, a statement of the change in religious, and political life. If the Lantern Tower seen from the Markt, is highlight externally, then internally, this is such lovely, if slightly challenging building. Dutch austerity, and a sincere full on concertation on spiritual afterlife. features throughout the church, but in a understated no nonsense way.
A wander around just taking in the quiet atmosphere, is a hour well spent - there is so much to see.

It's worth a visit and is only 3 euros to do so. Some really good stained glass windows and surprisingly, 3 large ship models hung from the ceiling.
