About
Het Museum van de Twintigste Eeuw in Hoorn vertelt aan de hand van honderden voorwerpen en tientallen interieurs het leven in de vorige eeuw. Hoe woonden onze (groot)ouders?

Toys, kitchen equipment, radios, gramophones, tools, computers, televions.
A fascinating experience. I'll go again!

This museum was a wonderful experience. First, it's location at Hoorn's Oostereiland, in former years a grim place with nil liberty for it's inhabitants, but nowadays a pleasant spot with this museum, several cinemas, a hotel and a few restaurants. This "Museum of the 20th Century" features all the stuff that you, your family and your grandparents have thrown away, what you will regret when strolling along the - nicely themed - exhibits. Apart from it's default exhibit, the museum has several special highlights that rotate more frequently. We think the museum must have an enormous storehouse from which they can fill their show!

As a millennium kid I went here with my girlfriend, aunt and uncle. For them it was like they were entering houses out of their past. The told us so passionate about it, everything came alive. I recognised a lot items that were at my grandparents home. It is like walking through history. Amazing to see how enormously things have changed in a few decades. Worth every penny!

This museum describes the life in the Netherlands in the 20th century. One can find many things from that era in a quick way. Going around in the museum is fun and is not time consuming. Less than 2 hours is enough.

In the densely populated country of The Netherlands, most attention goes out to the four biggest cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague).
However, The Netherlands also offer an enourmous range of small-to-middle sized cities with a historical city centre. Each of these places are good opportunities for a day trip. Usually it comes down to a city centre with old buildings, churches, canals and other stuff (shops, eateries...).
Hoorn is such a place. The city centre is on the bigger end of the spectrum. From the harbour you can see the IJsselmeer, a former sea that was turned into a lake by the Dutch water masters.
Hoorn also houses the museum of the 20th century. It is located at the harbour. You can see alot of items from the 20th century: from toys to typewriters. I was
greeted warmly at the entrance and was offered a free coffee (🕺🏿).
I went to the museum for the temporarily Star Wars exposition. Not very big, quite some nostalgia items were present. The main characters of the saga had a life sized statue with a description, but not Darth Vader? NOOOOOOOOO....
In conclusion, it is worth to spend a day in Hoorn. In doing so, don't forget to reserve an hour for the museum of the 20th century.
The Star Wars exhibition is for the most part interesting for 12 year olds who have just taken there first steps in a galaxy far, far away. To be honest, that's probably also the target audience for Star Wars today.

I travel with my family, which includes two children (age 8 and 10). This museum was over our expectations. They had a Star Wars exhibition (also the permanent exhibition is very nice) and it is one of the best and most child friendly exhibitions I have ever visited. Our kids (and we adults too) loved it! What made it so good was that the children did not just have to look at things, but could try different Star Wars costumes, play with toys and participate in the exhibition. Absolutely worth a visit. If you want to see the Star Wars exhibition you need to hurry, because it ends in October. However, if they put as much thought into the next exhibition as they did in the Star Wars exhibition I am sure it will also be worth to experience.
As already mentioned the permanent exhibition was also very nice. The children loved the part with old toys and we adult liked the part with rooms from different time periods.
The museum has a quite ok museum shop and a cafeteria. The toilets are clean. And… very importantly... the staff is very friendly and helpful.

This museum is in a wonderful location in the Barbour at Hoorn. The collection of artifacts is huge and very poignant as it relates so well to the childhood I remember.
I wish the information was also in English. I read Dutch and found it very interesting but know other non Dutch speakers would struggle.
The staff are wonderful. They are warm and friendly. It has a nice cafe too.

The museum presents the different decades of the last century. There is a fully decorated rooms, such as kitchens and living rooms. As there is a meeting of different things. For example, you can see the old computers from the 80's. Also during my visit there was an exhibition devoted to Star Wars. It was very interesting.

A day before we went to see Rogue One I took my 10 year old son to this museum because of the Star Wars exhibition. Of course he ran immediately to this section of the museum to look at all the great objects, books, cards, puppets and toys that were displayed there. It was just great! I really wanted to see this when I was a kid myself, but it was great to see my child with a smile from ear to ear.
If you walk swiftly, you have seen this exhibition in about 15 minutes. But there are so many objects displayed quiet closely on each other I didn't mind walking through it for a second or even a third time. I kept seeing new things I didn't see the run before.
Man, how fun it was to enter the exhibition that looked almost exactly like the corridor inside the Millennium Falcon. And yes, they built the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon and you can sit inside! Ok, beamer quality was a bit poor, but it did give you some kind of a hint how it really must have been working as an actor inside this space ship.
Look for the maze too! It has fluorescent wires and look like laser beams. Take selfies with many puppets. There are displays of a storm trooper (really cool!), Queen Amidala, Chewbacca, a bountyhunter and paper stands of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, R2-D2 and many more.
There's a corner where you and/or your kids can dress up like a Jedi or Darth Vader.
To round things up: if you are a Star Wars fan...it is a 100% must see!
So far this exhibition about Star Wars, but wait...there's more! Lot's more!
Upstairs there are large rooms with displays of life size kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms dating back from the 50's! There are even complete stores like Blokker, or a toy store with window displays of early days, a barbershop. It's just awesome! Old radios, cameras, computers, arcade games, it's all there! I saw my old Commodore 64 too with its 1541 Floppy Drive. So fun to show my kid how thing were when I was his age.
In the main corridor upstairs there was even more Star Wars: LEGO ! Djeez, I'd wish I was 10 years old...
Parking is a pain in the butt in Hoorn. We ended up in a park about 10 minutes walking from the museum. It was cold and there was a strong wind too, but the visit was all worth it. Entrance to the museum costs 8 euro for an adult, 3,50 for a child.
The exhibition stays there until October next year. I might be coming again! It was fantastic! ;-)
Thank you for this great experience!
