Nice small museum which gives you all the information about the past of the area. Amazing to know that the landscape as it is today was man-made. All the canals were dug out by workers who cut turf which was used as fuel for fire, for heating and cooking. The museum tells you all about how it came about, how the people used to live and what life was like hundreds of years ago. Very educational and interesting. Nice for the whole family. A visit will take you 1-2 hours.

Giethoorn, known as Dutch Venice, has more waters ways than roads. To be honest, there is only one walking pathway going through it. Here is our tip when visiting Giethoorn:

1. Walking distance
Make sure you can go the distance. Once you are in Giethoorn, you can not be picked up by car. By boat yes but the boats travels in one direction in the village. The road consists of flat asfalt and wooden bridges. Things on wheels , like baby strollers, shouldn’t have any problems here.

2 Boat rental
- There are all metal boats with electric motors: whisper boat and larger sloop.
- You can rent for minimum 1 hour and up to the size of your wallet. Make sure you check the weather before hand so you don’t get stuck in the rain. 1 hour is just enough to go around the village during corona shut down. 2 or more if you want to go around the wetland around Giethoorn.
- Bring a wind jacket for when you are out on open water.
- Go slow! We had a good laugh when we corkscrewed in the middle of canal!

3. Planning
Besides boating in Giethoorn, there are museum, church, boutiques and restaurants. All reachable by foot and boats.

4. Camper sites
There are 3 camper sites within walking distance 1km from Giethoorn. All spacious and neatly maintained.

This museum, which takes about an hour, is really the only thing worth doing in Giethoorn other than strolling along the canals or taking a boat there. I made the mistake of staying there two nights and there's really nothing to do other than that. If you're single and don't want to waste time, you can take a day trip from Amsterdam (which is what I should have done) and avoid schlepping luggage and thinking there would be a lot more to do and see there.

If you are visiting Giethoorn be sure to take time to visit this very well done museum. It has recreated historical rooms and a collection of historical artifacts as well as a short movie of the town in earlier times, all of which explain how and why the town evolved the way it did

The visit to this museum and township was absolutely the highlight of our trip. This was amazing and learning how the town survived war and fires as well as hardship is amazing. The last fact is pretty cool along the timeline wall but you will have to visit the museum to find out that.

The old farm of Hendrik Maat was turned into a museum. There is an interesting movie about life in Giethoorn, including weddings and funerals. There are many traditional items. Most of these things I saw in other local history museums, but there are a few fairly unique things, like a fish cage to keep eels in and a small type of windmill for pumping small polders dry. It is also very nice that the personnel is all dressed up in traditional clothing, and showing traditional skills.

Stumbled on this place when walking along the pathways through the pretty village of Giethoorn. An interesting museum of how the locals lived here in the first part of the 20th century. There is also a group of ladies in traditional olde worlde garb making crispy pancakes for sale. The only thing is that there are no signs in English.

Giethoorn is a little village offering a number of attractions. Beautiful old style homes and buildings, walkways along the little canals, boat hire, shops, restaurants, museums, bungalow hire, B&B, cycle hire. This was an amazing surprise. We spent the entire afternoon wandering around and just enjoying the atmosphere. It could also serve as a romantic getaway as seen from the many young couples enjoying the boating and having fun. It is also pet friendly. It is one of the places one could include in a visit to Holland and the rural areas.

Visiting this museum was my primary goal in Giethoorn, as I am very interested in how people lived in the old years. The place is as it used to be 100 years ago which makes the experience really exciting. There is an extra small house with a storage/working space, as well as a dutch water pump etc. Numerous objects used for cooking, learning, playing or even clothes, wishing cards, old ice-skates, tools and bikes are exposed.
The staff is very friendly. Some old ladies dressed with traditional clothes were making fresh stroopwafel.
