Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I loved the exterior of this building and found the dome on the top fascinating. I was intrigued to see the exhibits inside and for €15 it was a must. I know everyone's tastes are different but there were only a few of the items on display that really inspired me or caused some discussion with my partner.
What I found unnerving was the way the staff constantly moved around. They were all very pleasant but it felt like security was following you around.
The exhibitions appear to change regularly so there may be something on more to my taste in my next visit.

The new Freedom exhibition in De Fundatie shows the 50 core Dutch modern art pieces since 1968 (in the curator's opinion, obviously). Beauty remains in the eye of the beholder, but I certainly found some objects quite stunning, such as:
- Lariam by Erik van Lieshout (about the hallucinations from the anti-Malaria drug),
- Clementine's Dream by Ferdi (soft large object),
- the large boxed clay object without title by Guido Geelen,
and of course the showpiece,
- The Unexpected Return of Blinky Palermo from the Tropics by the collective Seymour Likely.
Also some of the modern paintings are quite attractive. Overall certainly worth a visit to the Fundatie.

What a delight! The Jeroen Krabbe exhibition was well worth seeing, but the permanent collection was full of nice surprises such as a Dufy and a Turner. Lots of great Dutch artists: Mondrian, Sluijters, israels, Toroop and some impressive work by Jan Cremer. Worth visiting the chic cafe situated in the dome, with a great view out over the whole of beautiful Zwolle. Nice museum shop too.

I'm not into modern paintings but this museum succeeds is creating the balance between modern art and paintings belonging to the 18 and 19 century

The flamboyant museum director Ralph Keuning came up with the brilliant idea to combine the two sculptors Chadwick and Giacometti into one large exhibition, featuring over 150 works (that is including lots of drawings). These two artists really complement each other and although Giacometti is better known to the general public, Chadwick is perhaps the more disruptive and original sculptor of the two.

The exhibition is still combined with another special, Goldbrun by Yuri Honing and Mariecke van der Linden. Also top pieces of the regular collection such as Turners "Clouds and Water" and Jan Cremer's "Guerre Japonnaise" are on display.

The museum itself is also delightful and almost somewhat self-indulgent with its shameless dome on top of the classical building. Parking is easy in the Maagjesbolwerk garage just a few hundred meters from the museum.

Just look at the outside , typical pillars at the front and then a stunning hemispherical dome stuck on the top. An absolutely stunning contrast of traditional and new. Great building to look at from outside and needless to say great things inside .

Must visit just for the building. The Impressionist exhibition is quite limited but intense nevertheless. The Jan Cremer exhibition is quite exhausting.

Morning with our small group, and we hired a docent who helped describe the Jan Cremer exhibit, such a prolific artist! who started painting at age 14!! and has travelled the world, from The Himalayas to my home turf, Cape Cod!! Also a few Chagall's, one newly discovered Van Gogh, Turner, Karel Appel, and others. Good sized place so that you can easily enjoy it before heading across street to The Grand Cafe, where I got New Herring sandwich, fresh catch of Dutch herring. If you have time, spend the afternoon at Kasteel Het Nijenhuis nearby.

Friends and I spent a morning at this museum looking at Jan Cremer's art. The museum is well run and the personnel very friendly. They assisted us on where to start and end so that we followed the chronology of Jan Cremer's life. The exhibition included a video in a well equipped little cinema.
There is a cosy coffee shop with amazing view on the top floor, so keep some space for a coffee and stroop waffle. The coffee shop has a great view on to the city through the strange egg like structure on top of the museum.
The art is mostly uncovered and there are no barriers between you and the art as one finds in the Louvre for example. It was quite amazing being able to have a closer look at Jan Cremer's thickly applied oil paint and technique.
I can also highly recommend Grand Cafe Public, the little cafe across the road from the museum. The hamburger is really good and quite a large portion for European standards.
So if you are in Zwolle, the Museum de Fundatie is a very cool outing and the Grand Cafe Public perfect for lunch afterwards.

Well there are some representatives of Dutch and French modern art (incl van Gogh and Mondriaan) but none of the works of the permanent collection is really worth a detour. Better works can be found in other museums (e.g. Amsterdam). You also might have a look at the addtional exhibitions and there it is Always a matter of taste and luck. I did like the photo exhibition on the top floor by Henket, but was not that impressed with the 2 other exhibitions (Marini and Krabbe). But, as said before that might be a matter of personal taste. The building looks great from the outside with its grand cupola, but inside there is less to notice as extraordinary and the architectural approach is not continued
