- NoraatcSudbury, Massachusetts39,982 contributionsThe beauty of UtrechtAs in every Holland city or town, the canals are the magnet. The Canals Area is one of the most attractive in Utrecht. It is full of hustling and bustling restaurants, cafes, old buildings and lovely bridges adorned with bright flowers. Such a pleasure to walk along the canals maze!Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 8 November 2023
- Catalin H324 contributionsThe authentic Dutch experienceA bit crowded, but generally a pleasant experience. The area boasts numerous pubs, pastry shops, and bars with prices for all budgets. For those interested in a water excursion, there are various options available, from tours on one of the many cruises to renting a smaller boat for a more intimate experience. While the area is dotted with historical buildings, it's unfortunate that some of them are inaccessible to visitors. Additionally, popular attractions like the Dom Tower of Utrecht tend to be heavily crowded and, if you don't purchase your tickets at least a day in advance, you have no chance of gaining entry.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 May 2024
- newkruzer79 contributionsPure Dutch charmIf you're going to go to The Netherlands, you're going to visit Amsterdam. Sure. But for pure Dutch charm and beauty, Utrecht is the better choice, by far. Everything you'll want to see and do (except the Castle Den Haar) is a comfortable walk within the old city center, and while there's plenty of things to do as a tourist, it's not overrun by tourists. My wife and I can pass for Dutch, and it was a nice contrast with Amsterdam to have the people speak to us first in Dutch rather than English. It felt like a Dutch city through and through, whereas Amsterdam felt more like New York. Do both, if you have time, of course. But don't overlook this true gem.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 September 2024

While in Amsterdam on vacation we took a day trip out to Utrecht to explore. It was very easy to get to on the trains. The main canal that runs through town is lined with old shops, restaurants, and bars. Many of these get by on location alone but it makes for a nice stroll. I’d recommend getting off the canal and into the side streets if you are looking for better shopping and food options - but for a relaxing day of exploring the canals are great.

Within Utrecht there are a couple of canals snaking through the city centre. Around the canal there are plenty of lovely little buildings which have been turned into shops and restaurants.
The canal is lower down from the walking area compared to in Amsterdam and so there were possibly storage areas in the past which are now little cafes and restaurants and boat hire facilities.
It is quite a buzzing area with a good atmosphere so definitely worth checking out on your visit to the city.

Lovely old city area of canals lined with small shops and restaurants. Take the free Utrecht walking tour to learn more about the area and take the windmill bicycle tour to learn even more . . . Like when some of the canals had been drained to be a road for cars years ago and some walking areas/squares were parking lots for cars. It is amazing how this city decided to change to a better lifestyle with bicycle and pedestrian areas with refilled the canals with water! Wish more cities in the world would recognize the importance of walkable and bicycle friendly transportation. Check out Utrecht Centraal bicycle parking garage! There are some few tourist junk stores; however, there are several cute shops to visit along with a couple of great stores for better gifts from Utrecht. I recommend Groeten uit Utrecht and Keck & Lisa for gifts to remember your travels.

Utrech is very beautiful! In the central area there are some channels internal to the main "O". With lots of little corners above or at water level, this little Amsterdam has the advantage of having much less movement, much more tranquility...

We drove about 100 km to Utrecht from friends. Apart from the fact that the city center was difficult to master because of construction work mhhm .., this city is worth a visit. The oude canal (necessarily make canal tour 😁) as a central lifeline is great to look at, although ... many, many tourists have come up with the same idea.

Utrecht is a great, typical Dutch city with worth seeing houses and beautiful shops. The center is characterized by the Oude Gracht, which winds through the center. Some restaurants are right on the waterfront. We had borrowed a paddle boat and sailed along the canal. It took us a while to get control, but then it was fun.

There are tons of cute stores, restaurants, cafes in Utrecht. It's a very walkable city where it really seems like everyone is happy. Lots of people biking around, families out and about. People were quite friendly and helpful when I had questions in stores and everyone spoke English.

Utrecht is a very important city. Lots of night life, bars, coffees and restaurants near the channels, full of young people that gives the spirit of the place.
Mix of old and modern architecture gives the place a unique style.
The main streets are full of shops and you’ll find less channels than in Amsterdam.
If you want some peace you will find some stairs that lead you straight down to the channels were you can walk, seat and chill.
There are some little places far frim the most important bars that give you the oppprtunity of having some time near the calmy waters seeing the boats and kayakers passing by.

Can you access the canals area in a wheelchair?
Written 12 June 2018
Sorry for providing a general answer: The canals area has an upper and a lower side. The latter is not accessable most of the time, with the exception of a big terrace near the town hall in the bend of the Oude Gracht. An arch/tunnel allows you to move to the waterside terrace from a side street.
Having said this, at street level you will also find street terraces where you can take something to eat and/or drink and enjoy the summer. Restaurant staff will help by adjusting the tables and chairs, maybe less inclined when it is very crowded at peak times.

Yes. The area is full of bars, restaurants, a lot of people walking around...if you want to do a boat trip, for this you’ll need to check the schedule time table. Enjoy!

Hi ,
My colleague and I (2 women) are planning to stay back in Amsterdam after a meeting. Will appreciate some advice on :
1. Should we stay in Amsterdam and then make day trips to Utrecht and Giethoorn ?
2. Or are there other places we can explore- basically it's the first time for us in Netherlands- which place will have cheaper accommodation ?
Thanks
Priti

It depends on how much time you have.
Amsterdam has enough to keep you busy for 2-3 days. Be aware of queues, some places (Anne Frank's house the van Gough museum) have 2+ hour queues if you do not buy the ticket on-line and that might only be possible a long time in advance.
Rotterdam is great for modern architecture, Markthal is my favourite and near it the cube village.

Hi there I read your review and you mentioned it was a great day trip to Utrecht!
I'm planning a trip and trying to get understanding if we should stay in Amsterdam and just travel to Utrecht. Do you think it can be covered in one day?
Written 2 February 2016
Hi yeah it takes about 40 minutes by train. City centre and cannals certainly doable in a day. Depends what you want to all see and how long you have. We certainly saw plenty in one day.

Hello everyone,
Could you indicate/advice which is the closest parking to the canals area?
