Not long ago I took from long time friends on a walk in this area. Everyone really enjoyed it. When someone comes to visit I always take them here.

A bit difficult to find as I expected a bigger structure (Poort=Gate). Indeed the alley where the Coopers Guild was based is accessed by small gates on both sides (Dam and Rouaanse kade).

The façades including the basements with cellars have been well restored to their 17th century state evoking a pleasant historic feel. Barrels are nowadays made of steel and no longer of wood. The profession of cooper (kuiper) has disappeared. One can imagine how once the wooden barrels containing wine, beer, water or salted fish were rolled to the quays.

Well worth a visit!

After a visit of the more tourist focusing center we went for this place. Woaw! No commerce, only a few tourists, fantastic architecture and a native atmosphere of history and calmness. We were fascinated.

We had to take a detour several times to go through here during our stay in Middelburg. It was such a tranquil and lovely place.
It is an architectural gem dating back to 1642. A picturesque and beautiful courtyard, situated between Dam and Rouaanse Kaai. The courtyard was built by the cooper’s guild between 1586 and 1642 when coopers built houses and warehouses. The historical gabled houses and stairwells are all beautifully restored.

The wooden barrels that was needed to store water, beer and wine for the 17th-18th century trade-ships were made here. A Kuiper is the Dutch word for a maker of wooden barrels.

Beautiful old alley in Middelburg, you have the feeling of stepping into a film setting. Here they asked the barrels. Do not forget to visit this street with your city walk, it is a bit hidden, before you know it you will pass by.

This gate, and the adjoining street, was built by the coopers guild in the 17th century. The authentic gate and the warehouses with the lifting bars and external cellar doors convey a real 17th century atmosphere. This spot in Middelburg is justly a National Monument and is protected against change. A must see.

The charming alleys are one of the best things to visit in Middelburg, and while the town is not so big, it is still worth to take a walk and enjoy the old times.

I enjoyed the charming historical alley called "Kuiperspoort";The 17th century buildings are reached via a discreet gate located hidden behind the canal called Rouaanse Kaai.

The wooden barrels needed to store water, beer and wine for the 17th-18th century trade-ships were made here. A Kuiper is the Dutch word for a maker of wooden barrels.

In the 17th and 18th century,Middelburg trade companies(WIC,West Indische Compagnie) were an important investor in the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Surinam and Curacao as well as the spice trade (VOC) to the East Indies.
This secluded alley maintains the historical architecture of that period, but obviously the living conditions are much improved making for a quiet residential area.
