Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Large, ornate 14th Century city gate at the Northern end of the historic part of Dordrecht city centre. The gate has an intricate decorative design which commemorates various events associated with the city. The location, at the point where three rivers converge, is also very pleasant and, with a few cafe terraces close by, well worth spending a bit of time at.

Concluded our walking tour at this spot. Above the passageway is the Dordrecht Virgin with the coat of arms and a palm branch.
Our tour guide told us a story of two people who tried to sneak a sheep into town dressed in men's clothing to avoid the tariff. Now Dorters are proud to be called "Sheep Head". You will find sheep around the town to this day.

Dordrecht is located at a strategic junction of three rivers in the borderland between Holland and Brabant. The Earls of Holland and Dukes of Brabant were bitter rivals in the 13th and 14th century low lands. Once the city got the priviledge of imposing tax on all transportation on the three rivers in 1299, its significance increased dramatically. Ships would dock at the groot hoofd (great quay). Merchants and goods would enter the city through the gate (Groothoofdspoort).

The original structure dates from 1450 but is hardly visible as a newer early 17th century gate was constructed covering it. The riverside facade of the gate is the most interesting. The city virgin is depicted sitting in a fenced garden symbolizing her unmarried status, but also the invincibility of the city. It is unknown if virgins within the city walls were really safe.

This is the only remaining citygate in Dordrecht... the foundations of this gate date back from the fourteenth century, but it's current state and look dates back from the 17th century. It is different from any other city gate that I have seen in the Netherlands, both in colour and with it's decorations... This really is a must see!. not only for the Gate itself, but also this point of town with a great view on the water and all the terraces/ restaurants/ cafes that are there. The Gate is currently part of a Hotel/ Restaurant, but you can still see it and go under it without having to go and eat there.

Without having seen this city gate your day in Dordrecht would not have been complete!.

Old gate with old clock on the tower from one side and with royal symbol from other side. Beautiful view to the canal from this place. Good time for lunch, here a lot of restaurants. Entrance is free)))

The "Groothoofdspoort" is a former city gate in Dordrecht that is located at the point where three rivers meet; the Merwede, the Oude Maas, and the Noord. The building was designed in the 14th century and was originally built with gothic details. The facades were built in 1618 with the tower being added in 1692. The relief above the doorway facing the river was designed by Gillis Huppe in 1618 and shows the Dordrecht maiden sitting in the "Garden of Holland", holding a palm branch in her left hand and the city shield in her right hand, based on an earlier design by the Dordrecht painter Gerrit Gerritsz Cuyp. She is surrounded by the shields of the 16 cities who rebelled during the 80 years war. This really is a lovely piece of Dutch history and is well worth a look... It will only take 5 minutes of your time. Nearby is a great Dutch Restaurant called 'Jongepier' (See my other review for this).

I saw this building on accident. I took the water taxi from the place with all the windmills. Was looking and taking pictures as the boat pulled near to town, and saw this cool unique building. I would have walked near it and taken closer pics but didn't want to miss the train.

Old city gate, the nicest point is the views over the water where two canals merge into the river Oude Maas. You cannot miss it following the well sign posted city trail.

Well preserved gate to the city from the 14th century.

Lovely crest adorns the structure.

Not much here but still worth a stop do to historical significance.
