Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Since 1588 fish was brought ashore or brought on carts, cleaned and sold at this spot on the Gouwe river bank. One can imagine how it was: the fishermen and their helpers arriving with their small boats, traders with their carts, the crowds gathering (after an announcer had gone around the city), no doubt lots of seagulls flying around eager to get their share of the catch.

Throughout the years the 'banken' on both sides of the river were improved. They got roofs and a small house for the supervising and tax collecting authority was built (Commissarishuisje). The banks were connecting by a wooden bridge with steps (later demolished). Without activity the place looks a bit deserted, indeed like a monument.

The old fish market located on the big canal close to the Sint-Janskirk is a restaurant now. It is not particularly remarkable, but I was glad I took a walk along the canal near this place: I stumbled upon several memorial stones (stolpersteine)… they share the same tragic story with the stepping stones in Rome: these small brass tablets commemorate the Jewish citizens of Gouda deported to the concentration camps - there were 500 of them and 485 never returned.

When we first saw these picturesque covered structures on the banks of the Gouwe canal we thought they had something to do with laundering although they seemed too high above the water for that. A (Dutch only) information board hanging on the wall of the little brick house (called ‘het Commissarishuisje’) explains they were used for selling fish and date from 1706. The northern part, on Lage Gouwe, was reserved for sellers from Gouda, whereas people from out of town had to sell their catch on the opposite bank (Hoge Gouwe). Until 1850 there was a bridge.

Apart from taking a few pictures with the canal and the former catholic church as backdrop there is nothing much to do here. In winter the fish market seems to serve mainly as a parking space for bicycles. But there are several interesting houses on Hoge and Lage Gouwe so, for architecture buffs, it's an area worth exploring.

It’s not clear why this site is listed as ‘Rijksmonument De Visbanken’ in Tripadvisor and not simply as ‘De Visbanken’. ‘Rijksmonument’ means ‘national monument’ and is not part of a specific name.

Interesting place to seat and rest for a while and a special monument in Gouda. You can have dinner nearby or sip a drink.

De visbanken is a typical Hollands monument in the characteristic city of Gouda. On one of the canals.

Next to the Gouwe old fish markets are now in summer used for lunch or dinner. A special place for a drink or a good bite.

This is a very reckonizable fish market monument. It has been kept up well. On one side of the water the building is in use as a place for outside seating for a restaurant. The other side is not commercially used and for you to admire. Imagine how this area must have smelled, way back when fish was traded here!
