About
The Markthal (English: Market Hall) is a residential and office building with a market hall, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014, by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars. The Markthal was designed by architectural firm MVRDV. The grey nature stone building has an archwise structure like a horseshoe. The building has a glass facade on both sides, these are made up of smaller glass windows. The smaller windows are mostly squared and around 1485 millimeters wide. All of these are hung around a structure of steel cables, 34 metres high and 42 metres wide, which makes it the largest glass-window cable structure in Europe. Each facade has 26 vertical and 22 horizontal cables. The inside of the building is an 11.000 m2 artwork by Arno & Iris Coenen, named Hoorn des Overvloeds (Horn of Plenty).

    Melange of food stalls
The market hall provides so many options for snacks, drinks, lunches & early dinner. Asian, Mediterranean & European styles available. Some of the food stands have terraces on upper level which is nice to relax & see the ceiling art in an even better way.

    A must!
This is such an interesting place, hosting an enormous multi-culturally diverse array of restaurants & vendors, some with roof top seating and all well priced. It's right next to the cube houses tp boot, what could be better?! Can highly recommend a visit here.

    A feeast for the senses
Exploring the Markthal was like stepping into a paradise for food lovers! Great diversity of fresh products and flavours from around the world. The vibrant ceiling artwork also added to the overall appeal - what a building! Would go back any time!

    Most unimaginable market
Markthal is the most unimaginable market ever. While it is common to find food market next to residential premises, having a lively market right below apartment blocks still sounds unreal. Once entering the building, the 3D animation at the ceiling can impress every visitor. There are full of distinctive eateries and stalls selling everything from cheese to Japanese ramen. It is in line with Rotterdam's image of modernity and creativity.

Iconic structure that's worth a visit for touristy and practical stuff
Visited this place several times since our hotel was located near this. Love that it's just beside the Rotterdam Blaak station. We ate here, shopped at AH, took pictures inside and out. The square infront of it could really get crowded and messy during market days. The Markthal has a lot of food options but best to look for one with seating area. Or you can take away food and just eat outside in the square or park beside it.

    Nice to visit
Nice place to hang out, especially on a rainy day. I recommend going in and eating something, otherwise it's hard to walk around hungry and enjoy yourself. We ate from the Duckburger stand which is highly recommended. There is also a beef/chicken and vegetarian burger, which the vegetarian testified was excellent. From there it was easy to get around and occasionally stop for small tastings at interesting stalls.

    Eat at the stalls
Interesting mall. For eating, the stalls in the middle provide interesting options; unfortunately, there’s virtually no seating. The restaurants on the side (eg. Sàigòn Càphê, Takumi, Japanese Curry House, etc) serve at the tables) and provide friendly service; unfortunately the quality is mediocre and prices are high for what they offer.

    Worth a visit
The first thing that grabs you is how beautiful the building is. It is full of different stalls mostly selling food, cakes, coffee, and spices. It is definitely worth a visit if you have a sweet tooth try Madam Coco's lots of different flavoured coconut macaroons

Markthal, market hall, but make sure to go on Tuesday for the real Market outside too!
Gorgeous in the sense of the architecture and the decor. Somewhat like you see in many of these foodhalls in the sense on what is on offer. We had a happy stroll around, its busy and buzzy. The real interesting bit is the melting pot of cultures outside on a Tuesday when the market is on. That was so worth spending an hour seeing the people haggle and laughing.

Good food hall with plenty of choices. Worth a visit for some food to take away, or you can sit in the hall to eat. The building is also quite impressive.

As a chef I enjoy going to the market, this is one of my favorite because of the architecture, and the variety of international shops inside to get all the spices and taste the different cuisines from around the world.

It’s very unique and there is lots to see and do around the market. Next time you’re in Rotterdam check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

We went to a Vietnamese restaurant that I really liked. The quality of the food was excellent. The price was normal and our three meals cost about 55 euros.

I can only advise to come to Rotterdam to visit the Markthal, because seeing for yourself you can appreciate the architectural masterpiece inside and outside. Close to metro station and train station Blaak, but also having a gigantic three level car park in the basement, of course parking is for a hourly fee. Inside are an untold number of food stalls, shops and restaurants. The Markthal was opened in 2014, but is already the number one attraction in Rotterdam
