The Meir is the main shopping street in Antwerp. It stretches from the Anthony Van Dyck Monument at Leysstraat in the east to the Meirbrug junction to the west. The street is roughly 550 metres in length and has some of the most expensive rent space in all of Belgium.
In what is considered by some to be a Belgium version of NYC's 5th Avenue, you will find a mix of luxury retail brand shops, department stores like HEMA, shopping malls including the Grand Bazaar and Stadsfeestzaal along with historic buildings such as Paleis op de Meir and Rubens house and workshop. There are chocolate shops, nice restaurants and more casual eateries as well.
The entire street is pedestrian only these days so it is easy to stroll along Meir even if you are not keen on shopping. This also makes for a convenient walking route between Antwerp Central Station and sightseeing around Grote Markt so good chance you are passing along the Meir at some stage of your visit to Antwerp.

Meir is Antwerp's prime shopping destination. The pedestrian street is full of boutiques of all price ranges as well as shopping malls. It is also the best place in the Belgian city to people-watch and understand the local popular culture. Very pleasant walk.

This used to be or perhaps still is Belgium's premium shopping area. More and more people buy through internet or prefer a more compact climatized mall. The effect is noticeable as I saw quite a few vacant places. However, the pedestrianized street is great to walk through on a warm October day with plenty of people around and all kinds of shops (also unique ones and not just part of chains).
Don't forget to look up at the numbers 50 (palace) and 85 (Rococo style building).

Antwerp did not disappoint - a definite must see in Belgium!!! We went all over the city and every place fabulous, clean, upscale/ornate! Loved the Meir area, wide long boulevard - reminded us some of Madrid or Vienna. Would highly recommend!

This is a great street! You can walk fairly freely from the fear of being run over by a car. There is some traffic, so you need to be careful, but it's mostly pedestrians who rule in this street. There are numerous shops of every description in this street. It's like a huge a shopping mall. Into one shop, out of another and back into another.... Fashion shops, cafes, restaurants, tourist shops, electronics shops, offices, just about anything, it's all here. And it is quite pleasant, as long as you want to make it so.

Not really a tourist destination but worth a day or even two if you're in the neighbourhood. Lived there 6 years. I suggest you walk. Start at the Central Railway Station. Go inside, admire the ceiling, walk up to the platforms, have a drink in the café. The architecture is amazing and makes it one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world. Be alert for pickpockets. Behind the station is a beautiful zoo (take 3-5 hours, if you like animals in captivity ...). Next, walk the Keizerlei westward (don't be fooled by the diamond shops, many are unreliable, you don't know what you buy and rip-offs and fraud are common while the place is famous for trading blood diamonds). After crossing the Frankrijklei you arrive on Antwerp's Meir, a shopping street. No particular shops like in London or Paris. Don't waste your time on the shops, look at the architecture of many fine buildings above the shops. Half a mile, on the left is a square called Wapper, with the very nice Rubens museum. Worth a visit and giving you an idea how life was in the 16th-17th century for the rich and famous. Walk another half mile for the Groenplein/Groenplaats from where you can admire the cathedral. Well, you can admire part of it as none of the cathedrals in Antwerp is 'free' standing. All have houses build against their walls. Visit the cathedral, it's a half hour delight. Two hundred yards further north-west is the Town Hall. Splendid 16th century architecture. From here you can walk to the river Schelde. Apart from an interesting maritime museum in an old castle (Het Steen) the riverside is rather an ugly parking area.
>> On a sunny day you could continue north along the river to see the modern MAS museum with its ethnographic collection. Although a remarkable building, most of the interior is .... staircase (going up to the roof for a city view is free).
You've probably seen enough cathedrals in your life but if still interested and more time to spend, there are two others that are interesting: Saint Carolus Boromeus church. A fine example of 17th century baroque, and the Saint Pauls church. Both are within walking distance of the city center. Same with museums: there are a few smaller ones near the city center: Mayer van den Bergh, Plantin Moretus and Vleeshuis not far from the city hall. All three are in beautiful old buildings.
A few miles from the city center is the Cogels Osylei. A remarkable street. Almost a mile of amazing houses. Eclectic style build about a hundred years ago by the rich. Take half an hour to walk the street and admire the architecture.
Warning: some parts of the city are best to avoid after sunset. Shouldn't be a problem as they are not of interest for tourists. Getting around. Traffic jams are common all day in and around Antwerp. The city boundaries: on the west is the river Schelde, the freeway "ring" borders the east and south of the city. Older cars are not allowed within these limits (pollution). Cameras monitor the traffic so, keep this in mind. You can use public transport or just walk. Parking is difficult to find and pay-parking is about 40 euro per 24 h. Note that the public transport system is puzzling. This is not London or Singapore where public transport is easy to understand and use.
If you stay longer than a day, It's a good idea to stay overnight in the city and walk or, when you have a car, to park and stay overnight outside the city and use public transport to get in.
Best time to visit: May to September. Winter brings cold rainy or snowy weather, short daylight time. Spring and autumn vary a lot: bad weather and a few nice days alternate.
Avoid November till April when weather and traffic jams are at their worst.

As a real fashionista, I visit the Meir in Antwerp regularly. If you like shopping too, please plan a visit to this shopping paradise. If you are looking for a certain store, the Meir will probably have it, or at least one of the streets nearby. The biggest store on the Meir, is Inno. This is a big shopping center, that you can compare with Harrods in London or Lafayette in Paris, but which is a lot smaller. Inno has several floors. On the groundfloor, you can buy all kinds of jewelry, from watches to bracelets, of every possible brand. You can also find handbags there. On the other floors, you can buy fashion for women, men and children. You also have a floor dedicated to lingerie, bedding and towels. You can also find kitchen supplies there.
Next to Inno, you have also H&M, Zara, Forever 21, The Sting, Mango, River Island, Esprit, Mexx, Swarovski, Men at Work, Ici Paris XL, Diesel, Torfs, Springfield, Massimo Dutti, Urban Outfitters, Sacha, Bershka, WE and so on and so on. So as you can see, there is a store for every taste or style. Have a great shopping time on the Meir in Antwerp!

If you thinking about buying clothing, that's the place for you (also comfortable prices). It is a long long avenue of a lot of chains and private stores. On Saturday there is a great food and groceries market nearby.
