Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Church of St. Carlo Borromeo is a Roman Catholic church in the historic centre of Antwerp. It was built in 1615 - 1621. The famous painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640) made ceiling paintings in this church, but in 1718 they were destroyed in a fire caused by lightning.

unfortunately we were not allowed to walk into the church on a Sunday.
The mass was already taking place, the church was still relatively full, but an elderly man was standing in the entrance and made gestures towards us to leave.
unfortunately I couldn't pray
Pity.

This is a Catholic church in downtown Antwerp. Founded by the Jesuits, Sint-Carolus-Borromeuskerk looks quite similar to many churches in Spain or Portugal. Interior is elegant and decoration ornate. Maintenance is excellent to keep the institution to the past glory. Free admission.

Beautiful during the night, simple during the day. It is better when you see it from outside, I am not sure if it is worth to go inside. Good option if you like church photos.

This may not be the largest church among the many in Antwerp, but it packs a lot into a small space. The façade that greets you is very unusual in that it is a pretty flat, large surface adorned with statues and mock columns. However, inside is where it really shines. It’s dominated by a large, very decorative altar at the end of a wide, open aisle. The real joy is that you can go upstairs to the organ balcony and appreciate the full splendour of that altar, its apse and the patterned flooring.

And the fun doesn’t stop there. The Lady Chapel, like the church, is also small, but every part of it seems adorned with carvings, gilt-work or paintings.

If you want to get the most out of this and many other churches in Antwerp I would recommend picking up the Baroque Pleasure booklet in the tourist information shop. It may even be available inside some of the churches. You will get a decent (but not overwhelming) amount of information about the history, art and architecture. The booklet is actually part of "Antwerp Baroque 2018", but we picked it up mid-2019 so you never know.

We went to Sunday Mass to hear the music in this beautiful old church. The organ is spectacular, the choir is outstanding. The choir fills the church with beautiful song. Take time to look up st the organ or climb the steps to see it. The paintings are nice to take a few moments to see and enjoy along with the side chapels. There is a small display of bobbin lace there too.

We learnt of this gem when we were visiting Rubens House (also one for your must do list) ... and found the most amazing discovery.
What ever you do ... talk to the volunteer guides here - They are totally amazing and bring this fabulous place alive, with their insights.
Make sure you time your visit so that you can spend time seeing every corner (especially upstairs) as the photo opportunities were fabulous.
Given the time the guide gave us (for free) ... leave a little something in the collection box ... this is the BEST value in Antwerp.
I went back three times during my stay in Antwerp - taking friends who had not found it ... and everyone loved it !

If you're craving a break from the Gothic and are looking for something rather sumptuously Baroque, then a visit to this wonderful church located on an equally wonderful square is required. As a bonus, the beautiful architecture houses some equally beautiful art, namely paintings by Flemish masters, such as Rubens. Need I say more?
