Fine tribute to a European statesman

Although we are familiar with the Cinquantenaire Park, we never paid closer attention to a bust standing in an enclosed green space next to the rue de la Loi entrance. It represents Luxembourg-born statesman Robert Schuman (1886–1963), who played a crucial role in the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community (1958), one of the predecessor institutions to the European Union. In France, Schuman served as minister of finance, premier, foreign minister, and minister of justice in the 1940s and 1950s. The fine bronze was created by Nathanael (Nat) Neujean (1923–2018) in 1964 and placed in the park in 1987. Among the other public sculptures of Neujean in Brussels is “L’Âme Sentinelle”, to be found at the foot of the 145-meter-high Tour des Finances at Boulevard du Botanique 50. But of course, he is best known for his Tintin statue.

A nice monument

The Buste de Robert Schuman is on a nice spot in Parc du Cinquantenaire. It's a rounded area with some lovely plants and in the middle is the bust of Robert Schuman on a blue stone pedestal. Schuman deserves his place here as he is one of the main architects of the establishment of the European Union back in the early 1950s. This is worth a look if you are in this area.
