About
It was between 1818, and 1821, during the Dutch occupation, that the citadel was built in its current form. Throughout the kitchen, the bakery and the forge, you will discover the daily life of 400 soldiers that were living there. Don't forget to visite our new space 1914-1918, explaining all the fights that took place in dinant during the first world war.

- FernGlasgow, United Kingdom575 contributionsgo for the viewsdon't miss this on your visit to dinant! even if all you do is get the cable car up for the views, you will have a great time. in the middle of summer we only had to wait maybe 20 minutes to get on the cable car upwards, and less than 5 to get it back down. lots do see and do here, we only spent around an hour going in and out of the buildings but the views alone were excellent.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 November 2023
- anthony rAurora, Colorado229 contributionsQuaint little townAbsolutely stunning town to visit. Really cool Architecture. Did not know that the inventor of the Saxaphone was from here. After visiting you definitely know. There are reminders throughout the town. Huge six + foot saxophones line a bridge and represent different countries on their designs. really cool quaint little town,Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 February 2024
- EnjoyTravell1ngShrewsbury, United Kingdom180 contributionsMust see in DinantCombination ticket includes funicular ride up and down (avoiding the 408 steep stairs!) and a Crosieres Mosanes boat ride from a bit further along the quay. Basic information and exhibits explains the history of the citadel but the exhibit explaining the history of the August 1914 massacre in the town is an eye opener and previously unknown history to me. WW1 trenches and collapsed shelter was quite disorienting (there is an alternative way out if you suffer from vertigo or have difficulty with movement) but gave you a real experience of what it might have been like. The viewpoint has great view of the town and river. Overall would recommend as a must see as pretty much the only thing to do in Dinant.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 May 2024
- Dawn RCoventry, United Kingdom57 contributionsFantastic viewsAmazing views over Dinant. Well worth a visit especially the fort, do not miss a trip around the rooms including the room that was hit by a bomb. Good cafe and seating area. Great parking. Cash required for the toilets.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 May 2024
- Cleidson.Eduardo.MoraesRio de Janeiro, RJ153 contributionsA memorable ride for all ages!We chose to take the funicular up to the fortress, which offers a beautiful view of the city. The tour inside the fortress is steeped in history and very well-marked with historical artifacts. The views are absolutely stunning. There is a restaurant where you can eat after the tour. If you have the opportunity to visit Dinant, a visit to the fort is a must. Another amazing destination in the beautiful country that is Belgium. The town of Dinant is simply breathtaking!Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 June 2024
- Alan1BangorBangor, United Kingdom531 contributionsGreat views of Dinant. It was a dull day so we decided to take the cable car up to the citadel (rather than walking up the 430 steps!). Views from the top were great despite the weather and the Citadel itself was an educating experience. Audio visual techniques are used to help you relive the experiences of the past. It took about an hour to see everything and it cost 12 euros each.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 June 2024
- Elena v6 contributionsBrilliant place for big and small, really enjoyed itGreat place for kids and adults, history, and also very engaging how everything is presented. Had great playground as well. Some tips: 1. Park free at the top, loads of space, next to the cemetery 2. If nice whether, you have an option of boat tour within ticket price but you can also enter and exit as you please at the bottom of the attraction into town and there you can actually rent own electrical boat! 3. Do not eat at the food places inside the attraction, you can leave it at the bottom and enter any time with the ticket. At the bottom much better food and choices in the town outside of the attraction. 4. Toilets are not free at the kids playground , requires 50 cent cash, and are not very clean. Instead You can use a better toilet where siteseeing begins close to the view balcony , much cleaner and payment is optional. 5. I would recommend 1 day visit in total, to see the town and boat trip alongside the attractionVisited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 July 2024

We went to the citadel le de dinant yesterday, and although we knew we couldn’t access it with my daughter in her wheelchair, we thought we would simply like to have lunch in the cafe and look at the views. The entrance to the castle was in a very gravely track and then over a little bridge. We saw the exit was directly from the cafe and in a good surface for my daughters wheelchair. So I went to the entrance office and asked if they could simply open the exit fate to allow us entrance.
The man said that to go to the cafe we all had to pay € 10 per person!
I told him we would be only buying lunch and couldn’t possibly visit the castle. We simply wanted to look at the view. He said no we had to pay.
We were very disappointed especially my daughter who is not used to tourist facilities being so unhelpful.

We stopped off in Dinant on our way from Bastogne to Brussels via Waterloo. We bought the combined ticket to see the Citadel via cable car and also the river trip (45 mins.) on the River Meuse.
We thought the Citadel was worth the visit, stunning views down across the town and the river as well as the Museum exhibits.
The river cruise was also very pleasant as the weather was particularly pleasant.

We visited Dinant on 12 September 2020. The citadel, cable car, and river boats were all open and easy to visit. The 17 Euro combo fee (for adults) to do all three was a great value. You can buy tickets at the top of the citadel where there is a free parking lot, or you can buy them right at the bottom of the steps/cable car that go right up to the citadel. The boat we took was leaving every half hour from Quay 3, a very reasonable walking distance (less than 10 minutes) along the riverfront from the Citadel. The 45 min. boat ride was enjoyable. We waited for a boat with tables available on top. A boat worker took our order and brought our drinks to us.
For our visit, we were lucky and found parking on the street that was 5 euros for five hours. There are some public parking garages downtown as well. Because of COVID-19 the citadel tour is self guided. We were happy to go at our own pace and there were lots of signs and explanations in English. The cafe is open at the top of the citadel for drinks and snacks. The toilets were clean and cost .50 Euros: Have fun!

When purchasing tickets for this activity you have the option to buy a combined ticket which includes the cable car, the citadelle and a boat ride. A great way to see this very old place. If you prefer and are fit enough you can go up to the top and down via the many stairs, or just come down via the stairs. Once at the top the views of Dinant are fantastic. The exhibitions and information about WW1 are very good, they are in French as well as English. A good way to learn about the history of Dinant as well as having great views of it.

We had a great tour of the citadel and city. Your entry ticket includes both the citadel and the cable car trip. If you have a car you can drive up to the citadel, park there easily and then take the cable car to tour Dinant, or you can start from Dinant and take the cable car to visit the citadel. The exhibits are very well organized, with a lot of light and sound effects and excellent explanations (also in English). The views are fantastic as well. Highly recommended.

For 19 Euuros each you get a ride up and back on the cable car, a visit to the Citadelle and a boat trip lasting 45 minutes on la Meuse. Brilliant value. The citadelle is superbly organised with a self guide tour following numbers. Very informative and worth up to 2 hours.

If you come to Dinant you can't miss the citadel and so makes sense to see. The good news is that it's well priced and so a must see.
The twin ticket offer is a bit of a bargain combining the citadel, including cable car, and a 45min boat trip. Doing both gives you an amazing view of this picturesque town and understanding of its history.

They closed Funicular at 16.30, we was there at 16.45 . We paid for it before 44eur, when we tried to get back up to Citadel parking, where our car was parked, they just said it's closed and we don't care how you get up there. Lady in the office was extremely rude :( Before we came down here NO one told us or warned us about this closing time. So we are stuck here unable have to wait for taxi approximately 1.5h

Is it possible to climb the stairs through the Citadel in the evening, Passage Saint Foy. We plan to park our camper beside Citadel and would like to eat at a restaurant/brew pub in town.
Written 7 March 2018
No, the fort people control the stairs and will close them. There is no other way down expect a mile along the road

I agree with you. Both are good. Even if there is less people in autumn of course.
During summer you can do a boat trip on the river Meuse.
Kind regards,
