Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nice square in the old part of Namur. It's dominated by the building of Palais des Congres. The name comes from the past - square of arms was the gathering place of a small troop and a central space hosting important ceremonies of military life.

The more I travel around Belgium the more I come to appreciate the subtle, slightly self-depreciating, and definitely warped Belgian sense of humour.
A perfect example is this interesting sculpture in Namur's Place d'Armes. It was created by the Belgian artist Suzanne Godard based on the cartoon characters, the inseparable friends Françwès et Djoseph, popularized in the local newspaper "Vers l'Avenir" in the mid 1900's by the painter and caricaturist Jean Legrand.
Françwès and Djoseph epitomise the laid-back attitude of the Namur people - les Chwès - whose main concerns are the weather and watching the boats go by. The snail is the proud symbol of the city and the snails in the sculpture are respectively caged and tethered - just in case they should try to do a runner: HA! Note that the larger snail's leash is actually attached to its own shell.

We came across this large square by accident and was intrigued with the unusual statue of these two human figures and the two snails one inside the case and one on a roap outside the cage. The farmers bring their produce into here on weekends and set up a large market which we missed seeing as we were not there on a weekend.

We’d walked through this square several times during our outing in Namur and noticed the statues and fountains, all seemingly somewhat run-down with the "triste charme" of Belgian towns.
Later at home I learned that two cartoon-figure-looking statues at one end of the square were of cartoon figures created by a native of Namur, and also found out the reason for the huge snail next to one of them: the snail is the patron of Namur.

I often park in the Beffroi garage under the Place d'Armes because it is easy to go the Pedestrian Only part of Namur from there. But the Place d'Armes has very little charm in itself. I much prefer the Place du Marche aux Legumes nearby, which is more intimate, charming, and full of outdoor tables from many restaurants - and so does everyone else in Namur judging by the crowds there.

We spent a while here as there are lots of things to look at, a bit more time looking at the Statues & Sculptures , a very interesting story about them.

There are often events in the Place - on our visit was a farming themed show which was interesting. Later, a large covered dance floor was being erected. A busy place. Would recommend just sitting, having a coffee, and watching the world go by.

Nice square - good sun trap with a couple of bronze statues which appeal to children for photos and small cafes and restaurants all around it with outdoor seating . Has a central raised wooden floor where a large marquee was hosting an event to promote the area when we were there
