Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We came into the brewery on a wet day and hadn’t booked to do a tasting but asked if they could accommodate us. Janos was the only one working but said he would happily do it along with serving the other customers. We then had a 2 hour tasting with so much information about the beer, the brewery, and so much other information about Gent and Flanders and it was so interesting. Janos was very friendly and accommodating. And the beer was of course great! Highly recommend doing a tasting when in Ghent

Brilliant tour with loads of interesting information and good knowledgeable guides. We had booked the wrong language tour by mistake but they fitted us in which was great of them. 3 tastings with the guide explaining what you're drinking. And a lovely little bar that you can stay in and have more!
A lovely walk out to the brewery from the old town as well.

We visited Gruut in December with the idea of being able to combine good beers and good food in a unique atmosphere (it's not every day you get to eat in a functioning brasserie!). We arrived around 1pm and the place was empty except for one other couple. There is a difference to make here between the beers and the food served - although since we were looking primarily for a place to have a nice meal, we were highly disappointed!

The beer: quite unique, brewed with fresh herbs (although which ones we don't know!). They have an interesting formula whereby you can taste all five for 11€ (going from lightest to strongest!). Overall a very good discovery

The food: the menu is quite basic, with only 5 main dishes. Unfortunately, two were already unavailable (for lack of delivery...) so we resorted to the Waterzooi, a typical dish from Ghent which, when well prepared, can be exquisite. This was not the case here... For a hefty 16€ we got a very small portion of completely dry chicken soaking in a kind of tepid chicken broth with a few poor pieces of carrot. Very bad and clearly not fresh/reheated food.

We actually sent the food back, after being unable to take a third bite... The waiter was extremely nice and understanding. We ended up leaving after paying only the beers (there was no way we were paying 16€ a dish, but the waiter of course understood this).

Too bad, because it seems the place was eager to promote this beer-food combination. But it's clearly not working. I would simply stick to going there to taste the beers, lots of other places for food in Ghent!

This is essentially a visitor centre. Gentse Gruut brew small batches of beer on site to enable visitors to see a working brewery, but it's pilot kit size and the bulk of their output is manufactured elsewhere.

We tried a tasting flight and were unimpressed. They seem keen on peddling a "medieval process", though nothing about their production is traditional... It's all temperature controlled stainless steel fermentation, just like everywhere else.

Rather than using hops in recipes, they use herbs in all but one of their products. The result of this is unbalanced flavour profiles across the board with a lack of bitterness, an overwhelming sugar content and ABVs that are pointlessly steep. The sugar issue is one that I feel the need to warn others about. Diabetic? Beware. Seriously.

It was impossible to know whether the wit beer was supposed to be sour, or whether it was the result of infection in the beer. Either way, a bad drink.

I'd recommend having a drink elsewhere and I'd recommend that the brewery rethink their hop policy.

The brewery is awaiting a new location, so this is an informal, sit down and be talked to brewery 'tour' in a sterile room.

The 'guide' is knowledgeable and talks you through their brewing process and history, pointing out the bits of machinery they use (which are on display). You get a sample of 3 of the 5 beers they produce (currently someone else is brewing for them).

Worth the €9 ?
Hardened brewery fanatics may find this a let down given you don't leave the table. Personally I found it's a nice hour spent learning about another independent brewer and tasting some nice beer.....it gets my vote for something to pass the time. Just be aware drivers....The best bit is the drinking!

We visit the brewery to meet Ariel for a pre arranged beer walk. We arrived early so had a Gruut beer which was pretty nice.

Ariel talked us through a few things at the brewery, then we set off on a walk which was about 3 hours long, stopping off at 4-5 bars/cafes on the way. I've never met someone so knowledgeable about beer and his history of Ghent - put in relative terms to the purpose of our visit was second to none. We only had 3 days in Ghent, so we arranged for this walk on the first afternoon of our stay. This helped us to find our way round and got advice about the best places to go from a guy in the know.

The brewery itself is nice and the beers good. We went back the next day for a drink so we could try all their offerings. I particularly liked the Bruin.

We had a lovely afternoon at Gruut Brouwerij. We tasted a couple beers and had a nice read. The waiter explained us all about the brewery and the beers, very good service.

Really enjoyed learning more about Belgian beers and what it meant to the history of the city/region. Definitely worth taking in.

Tucked away on a side street just outside of the city center, this was the first brewery we stumbled upon in Belgium, and were very glad we did! We didn't take the tour, but the beer was great, the staff was friendly and the atmosphere was very low key. We also tried their meat and cheese platter which was excellent! The outdoor patio area is also perfect for sipping a beer on a nice day. I would highly recommend stopping by this place, and will do so the next time I'm back in Ghent!

November 2018-We followed the directions down to this place and found an old warehouse that was defidently not being used...I was very disappointed that it was still listed.

We were able to try this company's beer at a local pub and they were good. Recommend the beer, but don't waste your time trying to go the brewery!
