Worth a look.

Interesting stuff to see and read on the history of mental illness. Creepy old asylum houses the museum and well worth a visit.

This was one of the best museums where I have been and won't even call it a museum. The main thing which I liked there was that this was not only an old unimportant museum, but also still working psychiatry hospital where you can see patients walking around and all surrounding by yourself. I really believe thats this helps to... More

Museum Documenting Early Psychiatry Treatment and Facilities in Ghent, and elsewhere in Belgium. The courtyard and buildings are preserved from their original use as Psych facilities beginning in the early 1800s. Very interesting exhibits, including a lot of great art made by patients of the facility. The adjoining property still houses mental health clinics and residential treatment facilities. A very... There are several different bits to the museum, the main section was about the history of psychiatric treatment. There was also an outsider art exhibition (art by people without formal training- some by people with mental health issues) and an art exhibition on the theme of adoption. There was a lot of information to read in English about the different... More

Interesting place but will be excellent for any psychiatrist or doctors out there. I liked this place for psychiatry exhibition but didn't proceed to art exhibitions hosted there. I if you have couple of hours to spare then this can be the place.

As I have a professional interest in psychiatry, I was obviously interested in visiting this established museum, located within a mainly disused, historical psychiatric hospital. First things first - do not be put off by those who refer to this museum as being 'out of town' and 'not so easy to reach'. Jumping on the tram will get you outside... More

Not everyone is into museums and certainly museums of pyschiatry but this a special place. It is a bit out of the centre so not the easist place to visit. However the museum itself has an excellent exhibition of the history of pyschiatry as well as the history of these buildings. This is one of Europes oldest psychiatric institutions. There... More

The museum showcases the major changes in treatment for patients with mental diseases. In particular it traces the remarkable work of Dr Guislain, who was one of the first to treat the patients as humans with skills, interests and emotions. It has a fascinating collection of technology used in treating patients, from the brutal to the humane.

This place will be very interesting for any physician of any speciality and ofcourse mostly for psychiatrist and neurologists. It provides information how psychiatry develops, about diagnosis and treatment approaches, different mistakes and unusal things from ancient times to modern. And it also had exposition of art created by patients and people close to special mental conditions.

For many years have I been working in cultural tourism here in Gent and this is a museum that I always mention when people ask me for the "100 things to do before leaving Gent". This is not just another museum. It's a part of a fully operational psychiatric hospital. The museum particularly hopes to succeed in proving that the... More
