About
Full scale reconstructions of war scenes, an extended collection of weapons, war equipment and photos make this museum to a true must-see!The chapel, in which the museum is located, dates back from the early twenties. This chapel was built directly across the Hooge Crater cemetery in memory of the many fallen soldiers on the battle fields of ‘Hooge’ over a period of 4 years. Rare military clothing of the troops, that where fighting in the ‘Ypres Salient’ (Ieperboog) are exposed in glass displays. Also you can see some full scale scenes of the Great War battle fields, very authentically reproduced. The theme of the scenes is very divers: German bunkers, British trenches and full scale horses with cavalry troops on their backs.

    Excellent museum a d cafe
Stopped to look at the museum, which is co-located with a very pleasant cafe. The museum is terrific! Well worth a visit. Saw a film about the war in the area. The cafe has a lot of trench art, good menu and drinks. Loved it, loved it....
THANK YOU! For your visit to our privé-museum. And for this very nice words! Always welcome, Many regards, Niek & Ilse (owners Hooge Crater museum)

    Fab find!
Highly recommend this place. Came across it when trying to find a camping space for the night (they have approximately 8 pitches) just behind their museum. Checked in at the museum and was made to feel very welcome and was given lots of useful information and local guide maps. Really enjoyed the coffee, cake and the service was fab. Visited the museum the following day, very impressed with the whole set up. Lots of artefacts on view and very well presented. Really good value for money and definitely worth a visit. Lovely owners.
Thank you very much for this review and nice words! Many regards, Niek & Ilse

Hooge Crater Museum - a special gem
We have visited this museum twice and never been disappointed. Prior to the visit we walked up the road and after about 500m to the left there is a brilliant and well-preserved trench system with open exhibits found in the vicinity. Back to the museum; what a well-stocked and moving experience walking through the different sections and also sitting down and seeing the carnage in black and white reels of the actual battles that were fought in this region. The husband and wife, who are the owners of the museum and restaurant are so welcoming and they were so patient with our group of 40 schoolboys. This place is well worth a visit and a good two hours can be spent here.
Many thanks for this review! And the nice words about our museum. Always welcome, even with 40 schoolboys! Kind regards, and hope to see you again in the near future. Greetings Niek

    Great little museum.
We used this as a stop-off on the way to Eurotunnel Calais. A great find. We spent a good three hours there, absorbing all the information. Almost all displays had information in English, and all displays were clean, polished and created really well. The cafe was great value, and even though it was really busy, the service was quick, friendly and efficient.
Dear, Thank you for your review and nice words about our museum, café and staff. Many thanks for you visit. Kind regards, Niek - owner

    Great museum
Great museum. Friendly staff. Well curated with nice flow of info boards telling story of the dreadful fighting in immediate area and wider context. Looked good for kids too. Nice film playing on a loop. Cool to see the window upstairs to see the terrain and strategic ridges. Also cafe attached looked good and had few locals there so good sign.
Thank you for your review and nice words about our museum, café and staff! Many thanks for you visit. Kind regards, Niek - owner

Wonderful WW1 Museum on the Menin Road
Visited the museum on a whistle stop tour of Ypres & the local area & this was one of the best we went to. A large museum, packed full of exhibits, relics from the war, uniforms & weapons. Everything is brilliantly presented, well laid out & has some nice info on the history of the place. A visit here is highly recommended. When we were there a couple of very large coach parties were in the cafe which was a shame as we would’ve had to wait quite a while to get a coffee, but that shows just how popular Hooge Crater Museum is. One of the top museums I’ve visited..anywhere, definitely needs to be on the list when visiting the battlefields.

    Child friendly experience
Really friendly welcome. Great for children - there is a treasure hunt and videos made by children. Nice displays and the viewing window is a nice touch. Plenty of memorabilia and the signage is good. I would recommend a visit particularly if travelling with children as very well catered for.

My first taste of WW1 museums.
I have been to many military and war museums and this rates as one of the best. It keeps the WW1 story local to the site but also gives a overview of the war zone. The dioramas are just brilliant with great attention to detail on both sides of the conflict. This museum needs to continue to be fully supported by visitors to the area.

We were staying at the hotel next door so thought we’d visit this museum. Had a warm welcome - all the staff throughout both the museum and cafe were very friendly and happy to help.

The museum itself is relatively small but filled to the brim with interesting exhibits and information. Certainly worth the very reasonable entrance fee.

Their cafe is wonderful too. We grabbed a coffee after our walk around the museum but then seeing some of the food they were serving we decided to have a light lunch ourselves. Great food and service.

Would recommend to anyone passing through the area.

An excellent museum and cafe complex at one fo the focal points for this important area of the World War One Western Front. There is a large range of local finds within the museum and the fascinating range of social artifacts coupled with period music of the period gives the whole place an ambience of the period. The cafe/restaurant was very good with an excellent range of meats, cheeses and salads - superb breads were also served. There was also an excellent range of local beers and wines.

Stopped for lunch as part of an organised WW1 battlefield tour, and then had an hour + to look around museum. I understand that it is privately curated and has grown in size and professionalism over the years. Very interesting story line, a really good explainer video and altogether well worth a visit.

Doubtlessly the best and most welcoming 'history hub' of the region. A fantastic WW1 museum linking to an excellent café, where one can enjoy the very best of Flemish hospitality. Great food, beautiful beers and hot drinks. Spotlessly clean and tidy at all times.

Can't be recommended enough.

Exceptional visit.
Fascinating collection of real artefacts linked with great displays and highly informative descriptions. We could easily have spent the whole morning there as there is so much to see. Very good refreshments and charming and helpful staff.
The horrors of the War are clear for everyone to see .
