This is such a moving experience. Tens of thousands of soldiers with no known resting place are named on every facet of the monument. It's a very impressive building straddling the river and set in lawns and gardens. At 8 pm members of the local...More

My husband and I attended a ceremony one evening. It was very moving and there were so many people which added to the atmosphere. The buglers were awesome and the sound echoed around the gate. Extraordinary.

We visited twice - once to see the memorial, and once for the nightly ceremony. The memorial is designed as a Roman triumphal arch, and displays the names of the nearly 55,000 soldiers of the (then) British Empire who were missing in action, up until...More

It is incredible that they kept this tradition going every night. A definite must see. Try to be there a bit before 20:00 at night to get a better view.

Probably the main reason why you would visit Ypres, but if it’s not you must. Beautifully presented and emotionally inspiring when you read just a few of the 54,000 names! The last post was very moving.

If you know the name and regiment it could still take a while but all the Australian battalions are together so that might be easier. There is a shelf below the column where his name is so you can leave a poppy there.
