Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The place is considered to be a former synagogue in the old Jewish Quarter of Elvas, still it is not so sure, it was during many years a slaugtherhouse, and from my visit and my previous visits to other synagogues is doubtful its former function, but is the only tangible jewish site in town.

We weren't expecting anything special but in the end it was almost the visit we liked the most.

This is what was surely a great synagogue before the expulsion of the Jews from Portugal in 1496 (four years after Spain). In the 16th century it was converted into a municipal slaughterhouse.

A space was discovered with twelve columns (12 tribes of Israel) and what could be three naves and stuccoed walls.

The visit allows you to have an idea about the ancient Jewish community of Elvas, their expulsion (many of them came from Spain, expelled in 1492) and the path they later took towards Holland or England mainly. Or those who converted to be able to stay.

Currently there is no Jewish community in Elvas. And there is controversy over the granting of Portuguese nationality to Jews originally from Portugal. Apparently, Abramovich, the president of Chelsie, would have requested it. In Spain it was also granted but the deadline closed a long time ago.

The visit is free, very instructive and the caregiver is open to conversation.
