About
We have a passion for megaliths. And sharing this passion is our mission.Present day Evora is in the center of an ancestral landscape that has a significance for all Humanity. Here you can find the remains of some of the oldest monuments of mankind in Western Europe. The early farmers and shepherds that created them, some 7500 years ago, didn't just create beautiful and impressive monuments - they have envisioned an entirely new way of relating with their world and have set the foundations for our current way of life. The megaliths, embodying the new ideology of this period in it's fullest - the domestication and transformation of the natural environment - remain today as distant messages, hidden in the fullness of time.Join one of our tours and discover more about your own history.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This tour exceeded our expectations. In every way. Our guide Sira was great, very knowledgeable, thought provoking and made you really understand the time period in which these sites were constructed. She was able to answer all our questions thoroughly. We learned a lot about each of the sites and I felt sorry for those that visit these sites on their own without getting the information and context we received. Well worth the $30 euros and would highly recommend anyone to take this tour, it gives you a much better appreciation for the Alentejo.
It will be the best 3 hours you spend in Portugal.

Sira is an excellent guide who is both an archaeologist and specializes in public archaeology. Sira slso engraves the shale breast plaques that are sold at the Museum. She speaks English fluently; explaining megalithic monumental works, and providing a well-rounded context of the environment, cultural aspects and patterns of megalithic work. Ebora Megalithica was well worth the cost. We saw other people come for 5 minutes and leave, not knowing what they were seeing.

Sira did an excellent tour for our family of 4, keeping in mind our interests. She put the monuments in context to the changing culture of humans, pointed out key trees and vegetation. The 3 megaliths themselves were great, but Sari really brought them alive, with great knowledge and enthusiasm. It was one of the highlights of our almost two week trip to Portugal, and I would highly recommend this tour.

We really enjoyed this interesting tour with Mario. He is very enthusiastic, knowledgeable & friendly. We would never have found the stones without him and frankly wouldn’t have managed to drive our rental car over the narrow sometimes bumpy/rutted dirt roads.
Mario gives very helpful detailed instructions about the meeting spot for the start of the tour. He also sent us a map with detailed instructions on how to get from our accommodation (about 10 minutes drive outside of Évora) to the free parking near the wall of the city. Highly recommended.

Our group of 5 included one 8yo, and one 6yo. Sira was our tour guide and she did a wonderful job at including the kids. We felt privileged to have her with us, after she had done a documentary for the BBC about the amazing megalithic heritage of the Alentejo region. The tour was well conducted because Sira connected every dot. She was patient, fun, light, and she made us go back in time and think about things we no longer dwell on, because we lead such different lives these days. Or do we...? I highly recommend Ebora Megalithica to anyone looking to learn and see something unique, such as Cromeleque dos Almendres.

This was the most interesting tour we have taken in all of Portugal. Mario is very knowledgeable and friendly. He answered all of our questions and did an excellent job of explaining the sites to us. He spoke in appropriate levels to answer questions from novice to expert. He is a native of the area and has researched the sites extensively. I highly recommend this tour.

Our guide Sira was exceptional. A degree in Archaeology, fluent in 5 languages and just a wonderful, kind person full of experience and knowledge. What was truly unique about her 3 1/2 hour tour of historic Évora she was able to explain 2,000 years of history that we actually understood!
From Roman times, the Moors, the German Tribes and the Kings of Portugal.
Normal tours are a visit to Churches and to Castles but after so many you lose impact - they are hard to remember.
The History of Évora we will always understand a little bit about how/why/when things are built including the two walls that surround the City (one you might not notice) and how the aqueduct works (even today).
Sira has a passion for learning and we are truly thankful she shared it with us!!

The Cromleque and dolman were particularly thought provoking. I loved visiting the countryside: seeing the stones in a pastoral setting enhances our connection to the past they represent. Our guide Sira is very knowledgeable, is able to translate complex info to lay people very well, and has a good sense of humour. We learned a great deal and appreciated Sira's thoughtfulness and responsiveness to all requests. Highly recommend this tour if you have any interest in Neolithic standing stones and prehistory.

This was a fantastic tour! Normally we are hesitant to take tours but this was worth ever moment of the 3 hours we spent. Sira has a depth of knowledge and passion that brought the site to life for us in a way you couldn't possibly experience on your own. Her presentation is not only factual, interesting and philosophical but encourages full participation in the theories and arguments. Don't miss this tour!!!!

This tour was one of our highlights of our trip! Sira was amazing! She is truly passionate about history! She explained everything to us in a way that was interesting and made sense. She took her time telling the story of the megaliths and was fun to be around:) (We also learned that some acorns are a great snack:) ) I would recommend the tour with her to anyone, and if we are ever in the area again, we would take the tour again.

I am having a hard time sourcing guides from there.

Hi, we spent 2 nights in Évora. It’s a very nice town to explore on your own—aqueducts, Roman wall, cathedral, town museum (including some Neolithic artifacts which are nice to see after the megalith tour). Very good food, wine tasting if that’s your thing. If you’re doing a day trip, plan for a long day! Évora was our favorite stop in Portugal!

Thanks, Dr. Banks

yes, we we're picked up at our hotel, it was several hours, maybe half a day, we went through viator in booking this trip, but I just checked the viator site to give the the name of the tour, and I don't see it there. try googling the web site for the ruins itself, maybe that will help you, it is WELL worth it. good luck!

Hi.
Can I book this tour ahead of time from the US? I sent an email to eborameglithica but haven’t heard back yet. Can anyone else advise how you did it?
Thanks!
Written 27 January 2018
Agree with other comments - I booked via email too so try again and add email address to your contacts so it doesn’t go to junk. It’s a great tour.

can i book this tour for 2 people for 2nd Sept? what is the cost? How do I pay?
Written 21 August 2017
Sorry, I am just a client who reviewed this tour, so I do not know about openings for Sept. 2. For your information, we paid 25 euros each (plus a tip, which I added because we enjoyed the tour so much), paying in cash at the end of the tour.
Because TripAdvisor does not not allow contact information in a response, try looking up Ebora Megalithica Tours on the internet. I'm sure you will get to Mario's website or email address that way.
Written 21 August 2017
I understand that you pay them the day of your tour. Do they take credit cards?
Written 28 September 2016
I paid in cash after the trip. I'm sure they appreciate cash, given the small operation.
Written 28 September 2016
How far in advance can you book the tour? Did you book the day before, or weeks in advance?
Written 24 August 2016
We booked a fee weeks in advance via email. I think there are only 6 seats in the van and at the time we went there was one English tour a day. If you have your own car you can follow the van but the roads travelled are full of pot holes. There's no pre-payment for this highly recommended tour.
