This is a hillside town so expect some elevation gain in any outing. That said,thankfully there is vehicle access to accommodation within the walls because ours was at the top. The views are incredible from the fort and much of the walls can be walked to extend your viewing.

We climbed up and had spectacular views of both Spain and Portugal. It was definitely worth the climb and was not at all crowded in October. This is a well-preserved castle that is an important part of Portugal’s history.
