We caught the ferry from Faro to Ilha Deserta. €10 return and takes about 45 mins. Pleasant journey although not much wildlife to be seen in March. The beach is amazing. Beautiful sand. Lots of shells. Obviously too cold to go in the sea. We just lounged around and had a paddle. There is a trail you can walk but... More

We visited Ilha Deserta twice during our stay in Faro in January 2017, spending a full day there plus a stopover for a couple of hours on a Ria Formosa nature cruise. The place is well-named. It consists of a single low sand dune with a couple of fisherman's huts and a single cafe/restaurant (with public toilets) by the boat... More

I did one of the two island tours on a small speed boat and it was great. The guide spoke multiple languages and knew quite a bit about the islands as well as the birds. Binoculars were available to observe the birds and the tour I chose also provided blankets, in case you got chilly. I was there off-season and... More

This was my favorite part of my recent visit to Faro. The island was beautiful and pristine, though it was sad to see how much trash there was on the beaches. All of the boat tours that go are pretty similar, so it depends on if you want to see other islands etc.

It really is a desert island... Except for the good restaurant! One of the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon, a beautiful natural park.

The houses on this island were torn down some 20 years ago and some of the construction material still litters the place. Was a sad sighting... The island has exactly one inhabitant - an elderly fisherman - and his dog. If cleaned properly, the island could turn into a true jewel of the nature - but for now is very... More

Had a lovely day here. We arrived about lunchtime with about ten other people, but we soon separated out and it felt like you had the island to yourself! We walked a couple of kilometres then settled down to a picnic we'd brought. The wind picked up a little so we made a wind break using a coat and sticks... More

Beautiful clean beaches, never crowded. The restaurant is not cheap, but then they have to supply staff and cooking ingredients everyday from the mainland as no-one is allowed to sleep on the island. Food and drink fabulous. a great day out. Just walking the beach before eating is enough. Birds galore. Sea sparkling clean. We are regular visitors - an... More

Went over by speedboat. €15 return. Gorgeous day and it was pretty much deserted when we went. Took about an hour to do circular tour along the boardwalk, and that was with us dawdling! One side of the island is quieter with calm waters. The main area with its long stretch of beach had lovely huge waves crashing onto the... More

It is not as deserted as the name implies. Boat trips and ferry take tourists over to be there. It is quiet and there is a boardwalk, which we didn't use as the tide was out so we walked the yellow sandy beach. A nice break on the boat trip.
