This place is so cool. The boat trips leave from here. The bars and restaurants are amazing, with great views. There is an outdoor cinema too.
Great place to people watch.

Beutiful and calm place for a glass of wine. Some days are quite busy there, but you'll find a quieter place for relax watching the marina moviment.

Beautiful marina that borders both sides of the foot bridge in Lagos. Walkways lined with restaurants, shops and multiple kiosks that offer boating trips.

Many boats of all types are docked at the marine offering beautiful views as you look out towards the old town.

Lagos has a lot of history behind it, especially in foreign climes. Could have booked online earlier and got a better deal with the Omio app. Anyhow got the coach and got there so early, it was eerie quite! Clean as a plate, with quite a few boats. In terms of architecture, class. Strangely on the marina there was an 'old boat' quite long with two lookouts, which happened to be cut outs!!!! Maybe to deter trespassers!
Took a bus trip which went full circle around the town. Cost 2 euros, if converted from £, less. Saw a beautiful church there and not far away a monument to S. Goncalo. Nearby is an eatery with a view of the bay. Its affordable and for the hungry, worth it! Must see/eat if you ask me! Took the train back to Lisbon, say 3 euro's more than the single coach trip at about the same speed. The people were helpful. Afterwards spoke with a tour guide, there are quite a few along the marina, who gave me a better insight of its history, alas I only saw the new and not old town!
There is Lagos, Nigera, so when booking please remember this if nothing else.

The marina at Lagos is near the bus and the train stations, the taxis are about a half mile distant down the main street as you cross the foot bridge. The main street is one of two, this one has dozens of tent covered trinket booth, the other is in the town and is mostly stores. There is tons of Portuguese Cork product available, and if you are lucky you will get to listen to the street musicians signing their songs.

We were staying near the marina which looks lovely, but as you get closer to the restaurants and bars, it's immediately obvious that this isn't for people who want a traditional Portuguese experience, but if you can't live without Pizza Hut or Guinness, this is the place to go!
The exception are a couple of restaurants which are further along (away from the footbridge) which are quieter and do good food and wine.

We had originally planned to spend a few days in Spain, but Covid reared its' ugly head again and we were forced to change our plans. The variant Delta strain forced Portugal to tighten up its borders again, once we left, even if it was for only a few days, getting back in wouldn't be so easy, even if was just across the border in Spain.
So we had to form a new plan, one that didn't turn out so bad. Planning a stay in Lagos sounded pretty good so on to the internet to find accommodations. This time of year there were lots of choices. We found a VRBO close to the marina that served our purposes really well. It was a two bedroom flat that overlooked the marina, a pretty spot at a reasonable rate. All was okay! The flat and the marina are a relatively short walk from the old town, you cross a bridge over the lagoon and there you are. There is a nice malecon to walk along that leads you alongside the town out to the ocean, really pretty.
Lagos is an ancient maritime town that has a history that dates back more than 2000 years. It is known for its walled old town, cliffs and beaches. Lagos is considered the Historic Centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery. It was the frequent home of Henry the Navigator. There is a sad history also connected to this place, Lagos Slave Market, 1444, Europe's first slave market. The town has got some old, interesting buildings in it. At the entrance to the harbour is Forte Ponta Da Bandeira, for the price of 1.00 euro entrance, well worth a look around.
The area is well known for the Ponta de Piedade, beautiful cliffs that are located right out on the Portuguese west, where the Atlantic Ocean stretches out across to the Americas. You can arrange for a boat tour from the marina to visit them or you can do what we chose to do and that is to drive to them and take a walk along their tops. After your walk, you can grab a bite to eat at Restaurante Sol Nascente, a pleasant place to soak in the sun. We came back at sunset, and along with others, watched the sun set over the Atlantic, very dramatic.
When staying in Lagos, make sure that you take a drive out west to Sagres. There are some very dramatic cliffs here. Sagres sits at the extreme west tip of the Algarve, almost as far as you can go and still remain on the European continent. Very impressive, but I think what I found the most dramatic here were the cliff fishermen, bending over watching their lines dancing far below. It gives me goose bumps, just thinking about it!
We were here in the off season, the temperature was pleasant enough and of course, there were not a great many people around. Maybe next time we will come a bit more early so we can get in some beach time.
