This is mainly a museum filled with military weapons from the 19th and 20th century up to WW2. Hundreds of them. So if you are into this you know you have to go there. I am not quite into the details of a machine gun pointing out towards the sea, but as it is situated in a real military fortress... More

This military museum (Fort São Brás) is a working military establishment, so we were given an official visitor's pass by a soldier in uniform! The Fort was built in the mid-sixteenth century and now contains a collection of artefacts from the Island's military history, such as uniforms, weapons, musical instruments, communication equipment, etc. There is not much explanation in English,... We were coming to the end of our Caribbean cruise and did not fancy any of the ship's Tours and went ashore ourselves and found this great little Museum. There is a very interesting collection of weapons. There is a very low entry charge, reduced for seniors

The museum is located within the Fort of Sao Braz and is included in the €3 entrance fee. There appears to be a random approach taken to the labeling of exhibits: sometimes there is an English translation; sometimes there isn't. The museum contains various guns, grenades, uniforms and general military memorabilia. Perhaps the most interesting exhibit was the temporary one... More

As with many sights in the Azores it would be great to have the hours and days of the week they are open posted outside. When we went in it was o.k. but had a lot of mold in some rooms and not as good a view of the harbour as we thought it would.

You will see a small collection of fire arms used by the Portugese, illustrating its evolution in time. A second part tells a bit more about the history of the fort A lot of the explanations are not available in another language than Portugese Finally, you can walk around the fort, which is not very spectacular, nor does it offer... We always visit forts when we travel so, this was one of our first destinations. The place is well tended with many excellent exhibits. The view from the top is breathtaking! A great bargain at 3 Euro (Clean restrooms here as well)
