Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spent 5 nights in Ponta Delgada in a 4 bedroom penthouse condo in a great neighbourhood, walking distance to bakeries, grocery store and the city centre.
Found the city very clean, very conscious of recycling, compost and garbage collections. Toured the whole island and had a great time. Food was excellent at all restaurants--inexpensive

The gates are a lovely entrance to the pedestrian area of downtown. The contrast of the white and black is stunning and makes for a popular photo stop. I hear they are lit up at night but I didn’t get to see them since we were only in port for the day.

I have visited Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel island last November and was very disappointed in general.
Admittedly, this is an old town but it was very rundown and the streets were littered with rubbish as the bins are not cleared every day.

It certainly needs money spending and a "facelift" if it wants to attract many tourists and become a major destination in the area

We were only in this magnificent city for the day , sight seeing, it is very historical in and around the main gate area of the city. There's a must visit church in the square, very tranquil once inside. After, we enjoyed a coffee in the cafe opposite. There's a good mixture of independent shops and cafes in this area. On the waterfront, we enjoy a walk along the promenade/marina, again there's cafes and restaurants. There's also a tourist office, banks for changing money. There's some cobles streets in the main parts of the centre, up to you! but I'd sudjest you might wear sensible footwear!!!. Or if your not up to walking, there's a mini tourist train, not sure of the cost!! Have a great trip and enjoyable day as we did; and if you've found this review helpful, I'd appreciate your tick, thanks. BM

The location at the harbor front in the center of Ponta Delgada is perfect for sightseeing. With its striking black basalt trim and whitewash walled arches located on a cobblestone plaza also decorated in black and white geometric designed stones, the City Gates are a photo opportunity not to be missed. With one a 3 block radius of that City Gates is the famous San Sebastian Church, museums, city hall, the harbor front where cruise ship docks, shopping, etc. The architecture is unique. This island is so incredible. It is the best kept secret in international travel!

The "City Gates" are three arches erected in the Eighteenth Century to act, as it were, as the formal entrance to the city of Ponta Delgada, the largest city on the island of Sao Miguel and now the administrative capital of the Azores. The gates are formal and decorative only, with barred gates inserted below the arches leading to downtown ("Baixa") centre. The gates front a delightful mosaic-square in contrasting black and white-patterned cobblestones surrounding a square and the majestic "Matriz" Church ("Matriz de Sao Sebastiao"), built in the Manueline style. The arches are easily accessed from the esplanade parallelling the waterfront of the main port, and about 200 metres from the modern restaurant-heavy cruise ship terminal terminal. The arches themselves have an ecclesiastical counterpart in the form of the facade of the St Francesco church in Macau, another delightful part of the former Portuguese overseas possessions.

Ponta Delgada is a truly stunning old town. Portas da Cidade is an amazing town square area where the gates take pride of place. Don't stop here though, explore the amazing streets and lanes of the old town, built on a picturesque harbor with its beautiful architecture, quaint shops and areas to sit and watch the locals go about their business. Have a meal or a drink in one of the many local establishments, choose an outdoor table, and pick up a souveneir or two of your visit from one the friendly local stores. Find a spot down on the harbor and just sit, gaze and relax!

Nothing much to see. Its right in the middle of the city close to the church and many restaurantes. Avoid the "Café Central" nearby which is a "turist trap" - Expensive, not that good service and smelly bathrooms.
