- catandgazSuffolk, United Kingdom66 contributionsGreat fun for a warm dip against a stunning backdropA really cool experience. I imagine it will be extremely busy in summer, but in October it was great - still the busiest place we visited on the island, but plenty of space nonetheless. Beautiful scenery, impressive waves against the coast and this lovely little bay with incredibly warm water. The waves were tempered and there are ropes to hang on to for the swell. Small pebbles of pumice floating on the surface. Had a lovely half hour dip, then explored some rock pools. Great fun!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 October 2023
- KezzarPeterborough, United Kingdom33 contributionsA warm bath in the seaThe drive to the thermal pools is not for the faint hearted! Part of the way is a dirt track and we worried our little car wouldn’t make it. If possible go the long route round! The chicane travelling to the beach and back up is also pretty scary but it is worth it. We went at 10am and at first there were very few people, but when we left at 11am it was getting busy. The sea is so cold you can hardly believe it will be warm, but it was like a hot bath, even too hot in some spots! The ladder down is steep but short. I would advise beach shoes but plenty didn’t use them. Hold onto the rope once you’re inside as it can get quite choppy, but what an amazing experience! There are changing rooms next to the car park - we will definitely go back!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 May 2024
- Ann CNashville, Tennessee3,336 contributionsPonta da FerrariaPonta da Ferraria is free, it is unique. We were lucky as when we visited, early one morning in June, there was hardly anyone there. I would not recommend coming here when it is a busy time. The road to the bottom is no joke if you are not comfortable driving a stick shift. Steep with multiple sharp hair pin turns. You can chose to park at top and walk down but there is no path, you must walk in the street where both cars can come up and down the steep incline at the same time you are walking. The water temperature was not what I was expecting. We had to hug the enclosed rock area in order to feel the hot spring part. There is a latter that you take to enter, be careful as the area you are hanging out it is full of underwater boulders and there can be a current that moves you around. A series of strings was in place that you can hold onto if you feel more comfortable doing so. Before you decide when to go, watch the ocean conditions. If windy and rough water, don’t bother. Also we were told to visit between low and high tide. I think it’s probably better when tide is on way out. We went when tide was on way in and the cold ocean water kept the area cooler than we had hoped it would be. Changing room and restroom are available.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 June 2024

- carolegrayson7Cambridge, United Kingdom40 contributionsA must see when visiting the islandThere are 2 car parks one at the top which is the look out point and the one at the bottom is where you drive down the mountain to get to to go in the hot springs. Both were free. There are changing rooms and showers there they can get quite busy I can imagine when it is busy. We went at low tide which was lunchtime. It was busy but it seemed not so in the water as people are getting in and out so the area was busy but not everyone goes and gets in the water. You do need beach shoes unless your feet are tough. Walking across the lava rock is extremely uneven. There are 2 holes near the cove where you can see the steam coming out. Good to stand near them to warm up when you get out. A real highlight of our trip to the island.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2024

Even if you're not coming here to partake in a little swimming in the thermal areas, this is still well worth coming out. If you're planning to swim, then pay attention to the tide schedule. We were told by a local guide that the best time is an hour before to an hour after low tide. Twice a day for an option. We went in the morning at low tide and it was perfect. The thermal areas were not as warm as we had hoped but still there were some warmer spots as the incoming tides mix with the warm thermal water. Even after getting out of the water, we wandered around the whole area for another hour at least as it's just a spectacular location. No fee to take in the swim in the ocean and there are some basic facilities for free as well. Just drive down and park to hang out for awhile. Amazing place.

Top activity. A real ‘must do’. When we went at 10am (low tide 😉), it was busy but not overcrowded. It is a really cool experience and completely free. Frankly, we payed 35 euros yesterday to bathe in the thermal pools elsewhere (which was great, by the way!) and the facilities for changing and showering were better here than there, no charge at all. Fair play! And it’s an activity you can do in any weather- when the boat trips are cancelled and the visibility around the volcanoes is zero, you’ll be glad you read this review!

So I need to put some context here - have spent the last few days in Flores, Pico. Sao Jorge, Faial swimming in incredible natural pools with often very few people around. We went at 5pm to Ponta da Ferraria in early August - I would say there were 150 people in the water + another 100 lying out on the rocks - there were queues to actually get onto the ladders into the water. Even when we left around 6.30pm people were still piling in. It is a pretty unique experience but the authorities need to do more/have a ticketing system whereby there is a maximum amount of people like there is at other sites on the island as for me the sheer numbers of people in a small area really tarnished the experience.

The view, the nature, the volcanic trail, and the sea and definitely a must see. The Ferrarias natural pool is hard to get in, there are too much people, the sea current is too strong, you should wear water shoes (the rocks inside the water are sharp), always hold to the ropes that are in the water, so you go when the tide is low. So it is just for people that are not nervous or scared and can in the end relax.
We tried to go twice, gave up the first time, because there were too many people, a big crown. And this was in very low (if not empty) tourist season with the COVID-19 pandemic. The second time, it was 9:00 in the morning on a Tuesday, and there were already 10 people there. We went in, the water was not that warm because the sea waves were coming into the pool (although in low tide). Still it is a rare monument of nature, that you should visit.

Great hotsprings arriving directly to a natural pool in the Atlantic Ocean!
How could this not become my new fav place in Ponta Delgada?
We spent the whole day there, relaxing and snorkeling, you can see lots of fish, crabs and birds.
Beautiful place to enjoy both hot water and the sound of the best ocean on earth ;)
Nearby you have a snackbar, i recommend the artisanal fried potatoes and soup, for a light lunch ;)

We have never encountered anything quite like this in our travels. A thermal pool that is also fed by open ocean water- an App can up uploaded to one's phone to find the optimal times to go, when the water is the perfect temperature. The setting is extraordinary, as you walk across a black lava field to get to the pool, you climb down a metal ladder into the water, and there are ropes to hang onto as the tide sweeps in, often with surprising force. Highly recommended to wear water shoes, as there are big rocks underfoot.
Our time there was cut short by the tide bringing in stinging jellyfish, so the lifeguards on duty got us all out of the water.
But not before we'd gotten a chance to experience a truly unique Azorean aquatic experience.

How do you know when is the time to go for the water to be warm? Thank you! I heard there is a web site or app but I can't find it?
Written 24 June 2017
I had the same question! There is a great (and free) app that anyone coming to the Azores should download on their phone. It's called "Spot Azores" and it has a live webcam feed for many of the major attractions on the different islands. When you select the Ponta da Ferraria site (listed as "Ferraria" in the app), it shows the outdoor manmade pool but also gives the high tide and low tide times for the nearby ocean. Be sure to visit during the low tide times to experience the warmest water.
You can also just Google "Spot Azores" and search via the website if you don't want to download the app.

How do I book a tour or visit the Ponta da Ferraria? ANd a Car or scooter for the wek I am to be in the Azores?
Written 17 May 2015
Greetings
I advice you to rent the car quickly, previously before travel to avoid high costs ( for a week the médium price its about 160 eur total ) Go rentalcars site choose Portugal Ponta Delgada, or visit directly ilha verde rental , hertz rental or others. Ponta da Ferraria is near the Airport, there´s no bus down there, its close to the sea and once you get a map you´ll notice that is very very close to airport, about 10 min by car with no traffic. You can ask to any local that are very honest and will thell you exactly where to turn in the road to get there. Remember that from the Hill you can see the pools that are payed but when you arrive there you go to the left on foot for 5 min walk and you will find The natural pool with warm water, there´s a hole there that is very hot, very nice to sit there, like termal water.

do you know of transportation from ponta delgada to here? Thanks
Written 14 January 2015
I tried to answer this some weeks ago but my login was rejected.
As people have said, the only way really is to go with a hire car or driver.
To be quite honest I am not even sure whether it is worth it. There were a few people in the water and on the beach however we were not really tempted. The best part was the very good cafe restaurant where the car park is!
